UVA DOESN'T MISS PALMER MUCH IN WIN

Tora Suber scored 16 points to lead eighth-ranked Virginia to a 79-44 rout of Rider on Saturday night.

The Cavaliers (12-3) rolled to a 20-2 lead and never trailed again, despite playing without injured All-America forward Wendy Palmer (ankle). Suber had six of her points during the opening flurry.

Rider (3-6) closed to 35-20 by scoring the last seven points of the half, but UVa used a 10-0 run to open a 26-point lead that only grew.

DeMya Walker scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Tiffany Bower added 11 points off the bench for the Cavs.

Patrika Smith was the Broncos' leading scorer, finishing with 11 points.

In other games:

George Washington 79, Virginia Tech 58: The Hokies absorbed their first Atlantic 10 Conference loss, falling to the Colonials in Washington.

GW (8-5 overall, 2-1 conference) built a 10-point halftime lead as guard Lisa Cermignano scored 14 of her 20 points. The Colonials then held Tech (3-8, 1-1) without a field goal in the second half until 12:31 to go in the game, building their lead to as many as 24 points.

Michelle Hollister led the Hokies with 16 points and eight rebounds. Lynette Nolley (Floyd County) added 12 points and Sherry Banks (William Byrd) had 10 for Tech.

Radford 83, Winthrop 66: Former Christiansburg High School standout Rebecca McNeil posted career highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds to spark the Highlanders to a Big South Conference victory over the Eagles in Radford.

McNeil scored 15 of her points in the first half as the Highlanders (5-7, 1-0) took a 46-29 lead. Former Bassett star Kim Hairston finished with 13.

Katherine Kitchin led Winthrop (2-9, 1-2) with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Ferrum 76, Methodist 61: The Panthers remained unbeaten in the Dixie Conference with a victory over the Battling Bishops in Ferrum.

Kia Williams led Ferrum (8-4, 2-0) with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Former Bassett standout Aimee Barker added 15 points and Marilea Hale (Glenvar) had 14.

Methodist's record slipped to 2-8, 1-1.

Emory & Henry 70, Washington and Lee 47: The Wasps took a 7-0 lead and cruised to an ODAC victory over the Generals in Lexington. Emory and Henry (5-6, 5-2) shot 62 percent from beyond the arc.

Sallie Lefler led the Wasps with 18 points and Angie Simpkins added 14. Tonia Dean had 10 points and Amber Hinkle grabbed nine rebounds for the Generals (2-6, 1-5).

Savannah College of Art & Design 51, Hollins 39: Beth Corbin scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack as the hosts overpowered Hollins in Savannah, Ga.

Hollins outrebounded Savannah 38-30, but committed 39 turnovers to 19 for Savannah (9-6).

Angie Johnson (James River) led Hollins (0-11) with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Amy Worley (Blacksburg) added 11 points.
