DRIVER KILLED WHILE TRYING TO HELP

A 55-year-old tractor-trailer driver, attempting to direct traffic around an accident on Interstate 81, was hit by a car and killed early Sunday. Alfred Dell Brown of Hilliard, Fla., suffered a severe head injury and died at the scene, according to state police.

At about 6:45 a.m., Brown got out his truck to help a motorist who had skidded into a bridge near the northbound entrance of Exit 118 at Christiansburg. He was using a flashlight to direct traffic from the left lane to the right lane when he was hit by an oncoming car, Trooper H.A. Spahr said.

The driver tried to stop but skidded on a slick area of the road, Spahr said. Brown was thrown into a guard rail.
