MONTGOMERY SCHOOLS ADJUST SCHEDULES

Last week's school closings because of the snow have created the following changes for Montgomery County Public Schools:

First semester will be extended by nine days when school reopens in an effort to balance teaching days between the two semesters. The exam period will start on the sixth day that students attend school following Lee-Jackson-King Day.

Days six through nine, after students return to school, have been marked as the exam window, with exams starting at some high schools on day six. Individual school exam schedules will be determined by each principal.

The scheduled teacher workday for Jan. 22 will now be a regular attendance day for students and staff.

SCHOLARSHIP

College-bound students can earn $1,000 scholarships in a national essay contest. Kaplan Educational Centers and Newsweek magazine, sponsors of the contest, will award scholarships to 10 students who demonstrate outstanding writing skills.

High school sophomores and juniors are eligible. For information, contest rules and an entry form, students can contact their guidance counselor or call Kaplan at (800) KAP-TEST. The deadline is April 1.

MEETINGS

The Christiansburg High School After Prom Celebration Committee is gearing up for the this year's celebration. The party will be May 11 at the New River Valley Mall. Students will be treated to games, competitions, activities, food and prizes.

To put on the program, the committee is seeking support from businesses, professionals and organizations in the Christiansburg area. The committee is hoping to receive a minimum of $25 from each in cash, gift certificates or prizes. Donations are deductible.

The after-prom celebration was started seven years ago to discourage drinking and driving by giving students wholesome late-night activities.

For more information, call Debbie Memitt at 381-2611, Kathy Habeeb at 382-4505 or Ann Rhudy at 382-2555.

Rising fifth- through eighth-graders or ninth- through 11th-graders are eligible to attend a two-week residential program at the University of Virginia. The Summer Enrichment Program for Gifted and Talented Students costs $680 for tuition, room and board and insurance.

Deadlines are Feb. 1 for grades five through eight and Feb. 15 for grades nine through 11. For information, a brochure and an application, call (804) 924-3182. Or write to: Summer Enrichment Program, University of Virginia, School of Education, 264 Ruffner Hall, 405 Emmet St., Charlottesville, Va. 22903-2495.
