Prize basketball recruit Melvin Whitaker was in his hometown of Garner, N.C., as second-semester classes began Monday at the University of Virginia.
Whitaker, who signed a letter-of-intent with the Cavaliers in November, has not received approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse to start receiving aid.
Melvin Whitaker Sr. said his son was trying to obtain information from Garner High School, which he attended through the 11th grade, and Oak Hill Academy, from which he graduated in May.
The more class time Whitaker misses, the less likely it is that UVa's admissions office will allow him to enroll for the second semester.
