RVC TOPS CATHOLIC

Joel Nester scored 19 points and Mark Arbogast added 18 as Roanoke Valley Christian held off Roanoke Catholic 64-52 on Monday night in a Virginia Independent Conference matchup at Roanoke Valley Christian.

Arbogast had 10 of his points in the second quarter, when the Eagles outscored the Celtics 20-12 to take an eight-point lead.

But Roanoke Catholic (2-5 overall, 1-2 conference) bounced back, cutting the lead to 47-45 with 6:40 remaining in the game. RVC (8-3, 4-2) pulled away with a balanced scoring attack. Nester finished with 11 rebounds.

Chris Lothes paced the Celtics with 16 points.

Parry McCluer 54, Highland 52: Shawn Sorrells and Boo Rowsey each scored 10 points as the Fighting Blues downed the Rams in a Pioneer District game in Monterey.

Jacob Hall scored 20 points, including five 3-pointers,for Highland.

Bath County 87, Covington Boys' Home 39: The Chargers (7-0) scored the first 19 points, bolted to a 48-12 halftime lead and routed the Indians (7-5) in Hot Springs to remain unbeaten.

Jon Rodgers scored 15 points for Bath County, which hit 64 percent (34 of 53) of its field-goal attempts.

Three-point goals: Portillo 2, Buzzard, Grist, McGlothlin 2, Mannion 2, Alexander, Rodgers.

JV: Bath County, 50-30.

Oak Hill 64, Hammond (S.C.) School 53: Ed Sheffey scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second half as the Warriors pulled away from Hammond (S.C.) School in Mouth of Wilson.

Steve Jackson added 13 points and Attila Cosby had 12 for Oak Hill (17-2).

Hammond (12-3) was led by John Matthews, who scored 14 points.

Girls

William Fleming 73, Patrick Henry 28: Kiann Trent scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as the Colonels (8-2, 3-0) took a 22-point halftime lead and cruised past the visiting Patriots (0-9, 0-4) in a Roanoke Valley District game.

PH (0-9, 0-4) was led by Carrie Moore, who scored 12 points.
