FLEMING PRESSES PAST HALIFAX CO.

William Fleming's press created problems for visiting Halifax County in the first half, and the Colonels went on to a 68-49 non-district boys' victory Tuesday night.

William Fleming (8-4) substituted freely after taking a 20-point lead at the half.

James Stokes led Fleming with 19 points and seven rebounds in limited action. Sterling Tate added 15 for the Colonels.

Halifax (5-5) was led by Carlos Jackson's 14 points.

Lynchburg Christian 54, Roanoke Catholic 44: Jason Page scored 10 points as the Bulldogs took advantage of the Celtics' poor free-throw shooting to win a Virginia Independent Conference game at Roanoke Catholic.

The Celtics (2-6 overall, 1-4 in the conference) went 14-for-35 from the free-throw line in the conference. Terron Reed scored 13 points for the Celtics and Chris Lothes added 10.

Covington 71, Craig County 44: The Cougars took an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, overcoming the loss of two starters because of disciplinary reasons, as Covington rolled over the visiting Rockets in Pioneer District action.

Boo Stewart led the Cougars (4-6, 3-1) with a game-high 16 points. Brian Holloway had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Mike Barber scored 12 points.

Eric Gillingham led Craig County with 11 points.

Girls

Holy Cross 36, Roanoke Catholic 32: The Gaels overcame a nine-point third-quarter deficit by making eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to slip past the Celtics in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Roanoke Catholic.

Holy Cross (6-4, 5-2) made 14 of 19 free throws, compared with 9-of-18 shooting by the Celtics (3-6, 2-3).

Marie Gamis led the Gaels with 12 points. Catholic was led by Teresa Monsour, who scored a game-high 16.
