Kristin Wood, daughter of Arthur and Edna Wood of Elliston, recently participated as a finalist in the 1995 Pre-Teen Virginia Scholarship and Recognition Program at the Omni Waterside Hotel in Norfolk.
The invitational event is for girls 7 to 12 who rank academically in the top 10 percent of the state.
Mrs. E.V. Russell Jr. was presented with a $100 scholarship fund in her name for her contributions to the Southside Garden Club. The scholarship was awarded to Scott Simpson, Blacksburg Middle School student and son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Simpson.
Mrs. Roger Simpson and Mrs. Robert Cannell received blue ribbons for floral designs. Mrs. Richard Baker, Mrs. F.C. Morris, Mrs. John Muench and Mrs. Roger Simpson won blue ribbons for their entries in horticulture.
Outstanding 4-H members received awards at the 1995 Annual Achievement Program in December. Chip Worley, an engineer at Anderson & Associates, received the 4-H Alumni award. Clay Rogers and Darlene Price were given 4-H Achievement awards. Leadership awards went to Elizabeth Sullivan, Shannon Marx and Timothy Nelson. Citizenship awards were presented to Elizabeth Sullivan, Andrea Kirk, Lori McKinnon and Shannon Marx. Lori McKinnon received the Senior Foods award. April Lester and Clay Rogers were presented with the ``I Dare You'' award. Outstanding Intermediate 4-H members were Jennifer Link and Andy Hedrick. Outstanding Junior 4-H members were Julie Woolwine, Tiffany Poole and Dwayne Link. The 4-H Extension Agent's Special Award went to Erin Wilcke.
The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley 1996 board members and officers are Dianne Birch, president; Marie Moon Painter, president-elect; Erma Jones, vice president; Terry Grimes, secretary; Robin Cooper, treasurer; Doris Abraham, delegate director.
New board members are Paul Barnett, Jowain Braddock, Kathy Carpenter, Russell Jones, David Moore, Connie Pratt, Jim Rakes, Beth Shelor and Meredith Simmons.
Returning board members are Winola Carman, Susan Cook, Mary Stuart Cosby, Linda Gray, Susan Haggerty, Diane Karfakis, Leesa Miller, Patricia Muldoon, Teresa Olinger, Debora Schneller, Caroll Smith, Diane Stuart, Etty Vandsburger, Barbara Waller and Douglas Wichard.
Donald W. Hash of Dublin and Teresa Martinez of Blacksburg have been elected to the board of directors of the National Committee for the New River.
