Four teen-agers face about 100 charges related to break-ins, thefts and vandalism at a dozen apartments and town houses while Virginia Tech students were on winter break.
Blacksburg police say the four Montgomery County boys were charged after an investigation of break-ins and vandalism in the northern section of Blacksburg between Dec. 15 and Jan. 1. Three of the boys are 13, the other 14.
Apartments in Pheasant Run, College Park and Terrace View were among those broken into and vandalized, according to a news release from Detective S.M. Taylor.
Items taken included money, clothing, compact discs, sporting goods and stereo equipment, Detective Sgt. Donnie Goodman said. The vandalism included breaking TV sets and spraying liquid kitchen items around the apartments.
"It was pretty destructive stuff," Goodman said.
A damage estimate was not available Friday afternoon.
The break-ins were discovered as students returned from the holiday break.
Police obtained juvenile petitions, charging the boys with burglary, larceny and vandalism. They are being held in the New River Valley Juvenile Detention Home. No court date has been set.
