Simone Poirier-Bures, who teaches English at Virginia Tech, has written a gentle memoir of her visit to the island of Crete 25 years ago and of her recent return. A portion of her book was written during a stay at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the end result is evidence that VCCA serves a good purpose.
This descriptive narrative relays the essence of the island and its people - the good and the dark sides as well as the passion and generosity of spirit.
Poirier-Bures explains that she organized her reminiscence by posting pages of memories on a bulletin board and moving them around. The order she establishes effectively provides a satisfying sense of chronology and completion to her life adventure.
Bookmarks is a regular feature of the book page which will focus on books, writers and literary events of local and regional interest and importance.
