GLENVAR PULLS AWAY FROM JAMES RIVER

Glenvar broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter Saturday night to defeat James River 51-46 in a Pioneer District basketball game in Buchanan.

Glenvar (4-0 district, 8-4 overall) led by three points at the half but found itself deadlocked at 37 after three quarters. Corey Willis led the Highlanders with 12 points while teammate James Williams added 11.

James River (0-4, 6-4) was led by Chris Firebaugh who tossed in 11 points.

William Byrd 79 Rockbridge County 61: The Terriers broke open a close game in the third quarter of their Blue Ridge District game with the Wildcats.

William Byrd (1-2 district, 8-3 overall) led by only seven at the half. Byrd then outscored Rockbridge 21-12 in the third quarter to open up a 16 point lead.

Byrd was led by Chris Childress' 30 points. Ricky Wright led Rockbridge County with 23 points.

Girls

Albemarle 55, Cave Spring 41: Cindy Frazier knocked down eight 3-point shots as the Patriots knocked off the Knights by 14 in a non-district matchup in Charlottesville.

Frazier tallied 24 of her 28 points from behind the arc. Cave Spring (6-4) got outscored by 17 points in a six-minute stretch in the second and third quarters that doomed their fate.
