CALLOWAY, Virginia Brown, 59, of Bedford, passed away Friday, January 19, 1996, in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born on September 4, 1936, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late John Paul Brown and Mabel Floyd Brown. She was a member of Otterville Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board. She is survived by her husband, Paul Calloway Jr.; three daughters, Phyllis A. Davis and Karen D. Cheatwood, both of Bedford, and Linda D. Watts of Lynchburg; two sons, Ronald G. Davis of Madison Heights and Gary L. Davis of Bedford; a stepdaughter, Patricia Calloway of Bedford; six sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Wright, Mrs. Pauline Stevens, Mrs. Frances Coles, Mrs. Geraldine Spinner and Mrs. Gloria Brown, all of Bedford, and Mrs. Mary Coles of Lynchburg; two brothers, James L. Brown of Bedford and Charles H. Brown of Verona, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 23, 1996, at 2 p.m. from Otterville Baptist Church by the Rev. M. D. Mays. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday, and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

HANNAH, Fred Graham, 78, of Dublin, formerly of Roanoke, pas sed away Sunday, January 21, 1996. He was a son of the late Henry E. and Lillian Milton Hannah, and was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Louise Booher Hannah, and a son, Robert Graham Hannah. He was retired from the City of Roanoke, and was a member of Mountain Pass Baptist Church and Roanoke Moose Lodge #284. He is survived by two daughters, Betty H. Rapp and Gale H. Wimer of Dublin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby Hannah, Elva and Hubert Puckett, and Eloise and Wes Earnest, all of Salem; grandchildren, Robert Todd and Cindy Hannah, Steven A. Rapp, and Gale and Bobby Taylor; great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Nichole and Erica Danielle Taylor; a devoted friend, Odell Rhodes, and a special friend, Dee Woolwine. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday, January 24, 1996, at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Ira Tolliver officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. JARELS, Swanson W., 76, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 20, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Stanley Jarels. He retired from Roy C. Kinsey Sign Company and worked part-time for Countryside Golf Course. Surviving are his sons, Larry W. Jar els, Salem, Tommy Jarels, Manchester, Mich., Johnny S. Jarels, Newburn, Va.; daughter, Michelle L. Jarels, Roanoke; grandchildren, Colleen Jarels, Jessie Jarels, Janie Marie Jarels, Jonathan Jarels, Janie Mae Jarels; sister, Edna G. JOHNSTON, Marcus Matthew, 63, of Pembroke, died Sunday morning, January 21, 1996 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem, Va. Born on July 27, 1932, he was a son of the late Mirent and Druzilla Radford Johnston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from National Gypsum Co. at the Gold Bond Plant. Surviving are his wife, Lizzie Perdue Johnston; three sons, Billy Joe Johnston, Michael Lee Johnston, and Ricky Leon Johnston all of Pembroke; one brother, Jimmy Johnston of Catawba; one sister, Shelby J. Collins of Pembroke; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 23, 1996 in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn and the Rev. McCLELLAND, Emma Jean Booze, 50, of Franklin, died Saturday, January 20, 1996. Mrs. McClelland was a native of Fincastle, and was the daughter of the late Roy Gilbert and Elizabeth Cahoon Booze. She was the widow of Richard Marlin McClelland Sr., and was a member of Rock Church in Franklin. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah McClelland Grizzard of Capron and Denise Karen McClelland of Franklin; two sons, Richard Marlin McClelland Jr. of Richmond and Kenneth Dale McClelland of Franklin; three brothers, Roy Garland Booze of Arlington, Tenn., Herbert Henry Booze of Vinton and Cecil Dennis Booze of Halston; five grandchildren, Jonathan Richard McClelland, Elizabeth Ann McClelland, Devon Kasey McClelland-Reyes, Richard Marlin McClelland II and Alexandria Dale Grizzard, and two aunts, Helen Brewbaker of Buchanan and Mary Peery of Troutville. Mrs. McClelland was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Virginia Booze Rock and Cleo Alene Booze Lugar, and a brother, Claiborne Saunders Booze. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. David Dillon. The burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Surviving include Arlene P. Robertson of Wytheville; three daughters and two so ns-in-law, Grace Iritta and Peyton K. SHIVELY, Vandal Plumer, 64, of Axton, died Sunday, January 21, 1996. Born on February 4, 1931, he was the son of the late Plumer and Annie Mae Radford Shively. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Minnie Pulliam. Surviving are his wife, Jeanine Shively of the home; two daughters, Betty Grogan and Linda Agee of Axton; one son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Vickie Shively of Axton, and one sister, Mural Moschler of Danville. SMALLWOOD, Jeanette Shumate, 64, of Vinton, passed away suddenly, Saturday, January 20, 1996 at home. She was preceded in death by her father, Burrell Shumate and is survived by her husband, Sherman Montel Smallwood; her mother, Mary Thelma Shumate; several aunts; one uncle; and several cousins. Mrs. Smallwood was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church and a Past Matron of Vinton Chapter #136, Order of the East ern Star. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 23, 1996 with Dr. Joe R. Bryant officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. TOWNSEND, Albert Hopkinson, 92, of Salem, died Sunday, January 21, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Mildred M. Townsend of Salem; two sons, Donald W. Townsend and wife, Doris of Roanoke, Albert H. Townsend and wife, Lillian of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Beatrice LaMontagne of Florence, Mass.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. WEBB, Katherine Akers, 85, of Callaway, died Sunday, January 21, 1996, at her residence. Mrs. Webb was a daughter of the late Everett and Sally Akers, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Akers and Roy Akers; one sister, Eva A. Amos, and was the widow of James Flemon Webb. She was a lifelong resident of her beloved Callaway, Va. She served on the board of the Department of Social Services of Franklin County. She was a member of the Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was Past Worthy Matron of Rebekka Chapter #84 O.E.S., was secretary at the Callaway Elementary School and retired as the Postmaster of the Callaway Post Office. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Bryant F. and Judy Moore Webb of Epherata, Pa., and Marvin A. and Patricia McGhee Webb of Callaway; four grandchildren, Sherri Kimmell, Antoinette Hodges, Thomas Webb and Michelle Webb; three great-grandchildren, David Anthony Hodges, Bailey Kimmell and James Webb Kimmell; one sister, Virginia A. Martin of Richmond, and a very special friend and companion, Jo Yopp. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Piedmont Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Richard Slider and the Rev. Gary Milstead officiating. Interment will follow in the Callaway Community Cemetery. Those desiring to make memorials should consider Piedmont Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Franklin County.
