MEETINGS

There will be a financial aid workshop for college-bound students and their parents at Christiansburg High School Wednesday at 7 p.m. Snow date is Jan. 31. It is sponsored by the guidance department and the PTSA.

The workshop will be led by H.S. Johnson Jr., director of financial aid at Radford University. A representative from Virginia Tech also will be available to answer questions about Tech's financial aid program. Application forms will be available.

Building Your Child's Self-Esteem: Activities to Make Your Child Feel Good About Himself is the topic of Montgomery County Public School's Title I Program. The January county-wide program will be at Bethel Elementary School Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Parents can learn about activities designed to make their child feel good about himself/herself. Children who attend will make seasonal take-home crafts.

The Radford City School Parent Resource Center will host a free workshop focusing on children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The program will be Thursday in the library of Belle Heth Elementary School from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Lois Kugler, clinical psychologist and a Radford University professor, will lead participants in activities and intervention methods involving the ADHD child. Kugler will bring the latest research information concerning these children. These children sometimes are viewed as "daydreamers" or prominent classroom attention grabber, when in fact the behavior can be attributed to their disorder.

Teachers who attend the workshop will receive two points toward recertification. Child care and refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 731-3679.

The Christiansburg High School After Prom Celebration meeting will be tonight at 7 p.m. in the girls health room. Anyone interested in volunteering for the committee is welcome. For information, call 382-3283 or 381-0059.

PICTURE SOMEONE SPECIAL

In just three weeks we will celebrate Valentine's Day, that special day for that special someone. However, that special person can be a BEST FRIEND. It can be the girl next door or the boy down the street, it can be your grandmother who bakes cookies for you or your dad who builds tree houses. It can even be your pet, who is always there for you and never gives advice you don't want.

We want you to draw a picture that you would want to give to your best friend for Valentine's Day. In addition, tell us why this person is special to you.

Drawings must be on 8-by-11-inch paper. We will not accept drawings that are on larger or smaller paper. Crayons, magic markers, colored pencils, paint or any other other method can be used.

Writings are limited to one page and can be in a poem or just a few sentences.

Submissions are limited to school children in grades kindergarten to 8th-grade. Your name, school, grade and teacher must be on the back of the drawing. Drawings and writings MUST BE ORIGINAL. Deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2.

Submit your entries to Hale Sheikerz, P.O. Box 540, Christiansburg, Va. 24073, or send them via e-mail to currentbev.net
