Construction starts today on a major road-widening project at the intersection of North Franklin and Depot streets in downtown Christiansburg. The Virginia Department of Transportation is advising motorists to use one of two alternative routes to avoid expected traffic backups.
The intersection - whose most visible landmarks are S&M Milling Co. Inc. and the Pizza Inn - is a primary route for traffic passing from north Christiansburg to downtown and beyond to Pilot, Riner and Floyd County.
VDOT is recommending drivers use either Cambria Street (Virginia 111) between North Franklin and Roanoke streets, or the U.S. 460 bypass between North Franklin and Roanoke streets.
The project, approved by the town and state three years ago, will widen and extend Depot Street from the North Franklin intersection to West Main Street. It is designed to relieve traffic congestion in downtown Christiansburg.
