CBS SPORTS HAS AN EYE ON HOKIES

CBS Sports' return to regular-season college football coverage will include at least two appearances by Virginia Tech, the network revealed Monday when a portion of its 1996 telecast schedule for Big East and Southeastern conference games was announced.

As previously reported by this newspaper, the Virginia-Virginia Tech game has been moved to Nov.29 - the day after Thanksgiving - with a 2:30 p.m. air time from Lane Stadium. An SEC game also will be aired in that time slot.

The Hokies' Sept. 21 Big East visit to Syracuse also will be a CBS regional, with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

CBS will televise 24 games over 13 weekends, with the Dec. 7 Army-Navy game in addition to Big East and SEC dates. The network's announced dates also include Tennessee home games against UCLA and Florida (Sept. 7 and 21), Miami against Florida State and Syracuse (Oct. 12 and Nov. 30) and Notre Dame against Navy in Dublin, Ireland, and at Boston College (Nov. 2 and 9).

The CBS schedule includes 11 national telecasts and six Big East-SEC regional splits. Most games will be chosen 12 days before kickoff, as was common under the former College Football Association TV plan. The Big East and SEC have contracts with CBS as their primary football network through the 2000 season.
