WILSON, TERRIERS DUMP KNIGHTS

Mayo Wilson cashed in on seven 3-pointers for an individual and team record and scored a game-high 27 points as William Byrd bombed Cave Spring 77-62 on Monday in a non-district boys' matchup.

Wilson was 7-of-9 on 3-point attempts, and the team hit nine of 11 (81.8 percent).

Wilson connected on two 3-pointers and scored eight points in the decisive second quarter, when William Byrd outscored Cave Spring 27-12 to take a 46-24 lead.

Chris Childress added 24 points for the Terriers (9-3), including eight in the second period.

Alex Phillips led the Knights (7-7) with 23 points.

Rocky Gap 71, Fort Chiswell 67: Will Dodson scored 14 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles edged the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game in Fort Chiswell.

Dodson hit two 3-pointers and was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line as Rocky Gap outscored the Pioneers 26-11 in the fourth quarter. The Eagles trailed 21-9 at the end of the first quarter and 38-27 at the half.

Fort Chiswell (4-6 overall, 1-2 conference) led 56-45 to start the final period, but couldn't get its press set up and went through a shooting dry spell.

Nathan Blessing paced Rocky Gap (3-0 district) with a game-high 27 points.

Bassett 61, Patrick County 56: Keith Harvey and Corie Manns took over offensively and the Bengals (6-5, 6-4) hit 11 of 16 free-throw attempts down the stretch to slip past the Cougars (7-4, 6-4) in a Piedmont District game in Bassett.

Roanoke Valley Christian 74, North Cross 48: Four different players hit 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Eagles built an 18-9 lead and rolled over the Raiders in a Virginia Independent Conference game at Roanoke Valley Christian.

Joel Nester paced RVC (9-3, 5-2) with 18 points and nine rebounds

Highland 73, Craig County 63: In New Castle, the Rams hit 15 of 18 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to keep the Rockets winless in the Pioneer District.

Highland (3-4, 2-3) led 41-33 at halftime and pushed its advantage to 10 before Craig County cut it to two, but the Rams pulled away on free throws down the stretch.

Jamie Fisher had a game-high 29 points for Craig County (1-6, 0-4).

Christiansburg 73, Carroll County 46: The Blue Demons took control early and gradually pulled away before emptying their bench in the fourth quarter en route to a New River District victory over the Cavaliers in Christiansburg.

Darrell Calloway was the only double-figure scorer for the Demons (11-2, 2-0), hitting for 12 points.

Grayson County 73, Radford 57: In Independence, Chad Shaffner scored 23 points and Brian McDonnell chipped in 18 as the Blue Devils (12-0) downed the Bobcats to stay undefeated.

John Robertson had 24 points for Radford (7-3).

James River 63, Shawsville 60: Shahan Burrell scored 18 points, including a stick-back with six seconds left, as the Knights held off the Shawnees in a non-district game in Shawsville.

James River (7-4) led 61-60 when Burrell's bucket gave the Knights a three-point lead. The Knights had led by 17 points, but the Shawnees (1-9) rallied behind the double-digit scoring of Larry Smith, Chris Graham and Simon Jones.

Ballard (W.Va.) Christian 72, Covington Boys' Home 54: The Indians rallied from a 12-point deficit to take the lead going to the fourth quarter, but let the game get away in the final period in falling to the Eagles (8-7) in Covington.

The Eagles' three Spencers outscored Boys' Home by themselves. Jonathan had 36 points, David scored 18 and Joe added nine.

Roanoke Valley Christian 50, North Cross 25: Rebecca Bryant scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Eagles downed the Raiders in a Blue Ridge Conference game at North Cross. see microfilm for box score
