Andrews and a retired employee of General Electric Corp., Salem. Surviving are a son, Alfred H. BURKE, Hampden Aulick, 82, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Januar y 22, 1996 in Roanoke, Va. He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Hampden Aulick Burke of Petersburg, Virginia. He was extremely active in civic affairs and a life-time Episcopalian. He was a veteran of World War II. He was the founder and an owner of Burke, Powers and Harty, Inc. Insurance Agency in Bristol, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Nina Smith Burke; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Hester (Diana Burke) Brant of Marion, Va. and Mrs. Dale Lee (Pamela Burke) Rucker of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Katherine Brant Manning, Elizabeth Burke Brant, Aulick Burke Rucker and Elizabeth Evans Rucker. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, Va., with the Rev. George Bunn officiating. DeVERTER, Ruth Hendricks, of Houston, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 1996 at St. Luke's Hospital, Houston, Texas. She was born May 8, 1899 in Jamestown, Indiana. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She married Paul L. DeVerter (deceased) in 1922. They lived in Baytown, Texas until 1979. Upon the death of her husband, she moved to the Hallmark in Houston. Ruth was an active member in the United Methodist Church, the YWCA, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, Huguenot Society of Texas, Colonial Dames of America, Magna Charta Dames, Daughters of 1812, Womens Club of Houston, Houston Genealogical Forum, and the organizer of the DePauw Alumni Club of Houston. She was the author of the six volume series: ``Our Pioneer Ancestors"", concerning the genealogical history of the Davis, Hendricks, Gallaway, Duncan and Dinwiddie families and several genealogical articles. She is survived by her sons, Paul L. DeVerter II and his wife Betty of Houston, Texas, and John S. DeVerter and his wife Ruth of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Private funeral services were held Saturday, January 20, 1996 in Houston, Texas.

ESTES, Florence Compton, (``Florrie""), 90, of Culpeper, died on Friday, January 1906, at Alexandria Hospital. A native of Culpeper County, Mrs. Estes lived in the Roanoke area for 30 years and attended Garden City Baptist Church. Mrs. Estes was the daughter of the late John and Adelia Compton and the window of Lewis Columbu s Estes. She was a member of Gourdvine Baptist Church and the W.M.U. of the church. She is survived by a son, Carlton I. Estes of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Aldena Estes Daye of Springfield; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Raymond Compton of Alexandria. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 1996, at 2 p.m. at Clore Funeral Home in Culpeper with the Rev. John S. Farrar officiating with interment in Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper

FULCHER, Hallie Baker, 95, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 22, 1996, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Ellis W. Fulcher. GILBERT, John Frederick, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 21, 1996. He was a 43 year employee of WSLS TV (Channel 10) and a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Minter Jarrett Gilbert; two daughters, Diane Summerson Gilbert, Mary Jarrett Gilbert, all of Roanoke; one sister, Jeanne Wilson, St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces. She was born April 16, 1900 in Carroll County, daughter of the late Joseph P. and Edna Cochran Hicks. Mrs. Henley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Y. Henley. She was a faithful and lifelong member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #1115. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, L. Edward and Imogene Henley, Hillsville, Robert J. JOURNELL, Juanita B., of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 21, 1996. She was predeceased by her husband, James Robert Journell, two sons, Rayburn Caudill Journell and Robert Sterling Journell, grandson, Dr. Gilbert J. Cuthbertson and granddaughter-in-law, Dr. Megan C. Danton. Mrs. Journell received her education from Emory and Henry College and Radford College and she was a former school teacher for a number of years. She was a charter member of Bethany Christian Church. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Loraine Journell Cuthbertson, Roanoke; grandchildren, Gary S. Cuthbertson, Jacksonville, Fla., Cynthia L. LEE, Marjorie Blake, 80, of Ronceverte, W. Va., passed away Monday, January 22, 1996 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, of a short illness. Mrs. Lee was born November 11, 1915 in Ronceverte, W. Va. and was the daughter of the late William B. and Lena L. Edwards Blake Jr. She was a member of the Ronceverte Presbyterian Church and a member of the Women of the Church. She also served as Church Circle Chairman and Historian. Mrs. Lee was a graduate of the Greenbrier College and was a reporter for the Charleston Gazette and West Virginia News. She also worked for the WV Department of Highways and retired from the WV Department of Human Services. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert Blake. Survivors include her husband, J. William Lee; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe W. and Teri Lee, Catlettsburg, Ky., James B. and Lucy Lee, Roanoke; one brother, Norman Blake, Ronceverte, W. Va.; sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Lee, Richmond; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Ronceverte Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Thomas Apperson officiating. LOWE, A. J., 90, of Floyd, passed away Monday, January 22, 1996 at his home where he and his surviving wife of sixty-six years, Loma Dell Sweeney Lowe, have spent their retirement years since 1974 in Floyd. Jay was a baseball player, deputy sheriff and coal miner before becoming an air conditioning mechanic for Celanese in Pearisburg, Va. for twenty-eight years. He is the last of nine siblings. Survivors include his wife, Loma Dell Sweeney Lowe, Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Dean and Bill Vaughan, Cherry Hill, N.J.; son and daughter-in-law, A. Jay Jr. and Tonya Lowe, Calverton, Va.; four grandchildren, Lynn Kim and husband Shawn, Cherry Hill, N.J., Dana Geib and husband Jeff, Lancaster, Penn., Jane Vaughan, Austin, Texas, Cooper Jay Lowe, Calverton; and great-grandchildren, Rebecca and William Vaughan-Geib, David and Jonathan Kim. McCOY, Bryce J., (``B.J.''), 63, of Radford, passed away Sunday, January 21, 1996 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. McCoy, a native of Parrott and Radford, recently retired from Appalachian Power Company after 42 years of distinguished service, which earned him the friendship and respect of those he dealt with throughout the New River Valley. He is survived by his mother, Reba T. Hopkins of Parrott; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry W. and Brenda McCoy of Dublin, Daniel E. and Sandra McCoy of Radford, Jayson B. McCoy and Jayson's mother, Linda A. McCoy of Radford; his sister and brother-in-law, Dottie M.. and Lou Kershner of Virginia Beach; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry W. and Glenda Hopkins of Parrott; three grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Tammy, Tracy and Christopher McCoy; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roy Jennelle, Otis Mabry and Linda Thompson. McEVER, H. Macauley, (``Mac""), 89, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, January 21, 1996 at Richfield Nursing Home. Born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 14, 1906, he was the son of the late James F. and Sarah Tucker McEver. He was a 1929 graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Business Administration. He was President of his class, and played football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, Mr. McEver coached three sports at Virginia Tech and later served as Executive Director of the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association until his retirement in 1979. He organized and developed the Student Aid Association, currently the Athletic Fund, to support scholarships for student athletes. He initiated the endowed Scholarship Program for student athletes and founded the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, serving as its chairman until his death. He was inducted into the State of Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, received the Virginia Tech Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1992, a member of the Virginia Tech All Century Team, served on the ``Old Guard"" Board of Directors and was an honorary member of ODK. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, served as foreman of the Grand Jury in Montgomery County for a number of years, a member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon, Elder and Superintendent of the Sunday School. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Stover McEver; daughter and son-in-law, Frances M. H. and George Russell, Blacksburg; son and daughter-in-law, William Stover and Vicki McEver, Warrenton; son, H. M. (Buddy) McEver, Jr., Blacksburg; sister, Sarabel Alley, Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Hutcheson Domico, Thomas B. Hutcheson III, Joel C. Hutcheson and Mark A. McEver; three great-grandchildren, Patrick H. Domico, Adam T. Domico and Thomas B. Hutcheson IV. MILLER, Evelyn Elizabeth Young, 87, of Salem, died Sunday, January 21, 1996 in Lewis Gale Hospital. Born in Montgomery County and also attended the First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clay Miller. ORANGE, James Henry, (``Jim""), 66, a resident of 2487 Calf Mountain Road, Waynesboro, died Friday, January 19, 1996 at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville. He was born in Bedford County on January 8, 1930, a son of the late James T. and Lula Heck Orange. He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Joseph Brown Sr., and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ronald and Lucille Merriam. He was a graduate of Montvale High School. He attended the Glen Kirk Presbyterian Church. He had been the business manager for the I.B.E.W. Local Number 70, a member of the American Line Builders Association in Vandalia, Ohio, and was a Trustee of the Outside Electrical Welfare Fund in Charleston, W.Va. He was a bluegrass recording artist and promoter for 40 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lee Lodge #209, a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonary, and a member of the Acca Shrine Temple, a member of the Waynesboro Moose Lodge #1309, and a member of the Augusta County Eagles Lodge #4129. He is survived by his wife, Nina Lucille Orange of Waynesboro; three daughters and sons-in-laws, Elizabeth (Jo) and Darrell Cassell of Hillsville, Bonnie (Dale) and Jim Walker of Hillsville, and Sandy Sollinger Orange of Waynesboro; three sons and daughters-in-law, James (Keake) and Shirley Orange of Mt. Airy, N.C., Jerry and Sue Orange of Troutville, Eddie and Kim Orange of Fredricksburg; also two grandsons he raised at home, J.J. Orange and Joe Sollinger Orange; one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Leonard (Curly) Abbott of Bedford; two brothers and sister-in-law, Earl and Rachael Orange of Montvale, and Edgar (Jimmy) Orange of Montvale; two sisters-in-law, Leone Brown of Waynesboro and Arlene Marlino of Staunton; one brother-in-law and wife, Edward and Lois McGann of Herndon; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. PHLEGAR, Calvin E., 58, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 22, 1996. He was the son of the late Helen and Kyle Phlegar. He is survived by two half sisters, Mrs. Katherine Speakman and Mrs. Barbara Flinchum, both of Roanoke; also surviving are many cousins, nephews and nieces. RAYMOND, Crystal Ann, 17, of 116-11th St., N.W., Pulaski, died early Monday morning, January 22, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Radford, Va. on April 26, 1978. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, and she was a senior at Pulaski County High School. She was a member of the Pulaski County High School Choir, she attended the Governor's School, she was the Cougar Mascot for three years, she was a member of the Honors Choir for the State of Virginia and she sang for Governor Allen at the grand opening of the Louisa P. Chrisley Fitness Center at the Pulaski County High School. Surviving are her parents, Steven Raymond and Deborah Blankenship Raymond, Pulaski; and brother, Eric Raymond, Pulaski. REID, Elizabeth Ruth, 86, of Brandon, Fla., and formerly of Roanoke, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 21, 1996 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Frank C. and Mary Patterson Smith, and was preceded in death by four brothers, J. Wade Smith, Philip C. Smith, Sam H. Smith, George P. Smith. Mrs. Reid was the widow of Forrest L. Reid, who was retired from the Norfolk & Western Railway in Roanoke. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn Reid Tucker and John R. Tucker, Brandon, Fla.; a grandson and his wife, John Forrest Tucker and Susan I. Tucker, Coral Springs, Fla.; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert F. Smith, Bluefield, W. Va.; also several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Wednesday, January 24, 1 p.m. with the Rev. William C. Logan officiating. ROSE, Louis Burnell (``Jay Bird""), 81, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 21, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie D. Rose. Survivors include devoted friends, Evelyn F. Perdue and Mollie DeBerry, both of Roanoke; one son, Burnell D. Fitzgerald, Lithonia, Ga.; sister, Lavinia Gatlin of New York; sisters-in-law, Alice Bronson and Ethel Joiner, both of Salem; brother-in-law, John Bronson, Salem; and a host of nieces, nephe ws, other relatives and friends. RUSH, Mabel Spence Watson, 72, of Lynchburg, died Monday, January 22, 1996 at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg. She was born in Fremont, N.C., March 25, 1923 and was the daughter of the late Francis Marion Watson and Edith Hiawatha Borger Watson. She is survived by one son, James W. Rush Jr. She was the wife of the late Rev. James W. Rush, who preceded her in death in 1989. Also surviving are three brothers-in-law, Charles C. Rush Jr., Dr. Grant Rush and Dr. Laird L. Rush; one sister-in-law, Vivian Callender Watson Wood; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rush received a baccalaureate from East Carolina University and a masters degree from Columbia University. She later completed her seminary work at Union Theological Seminary in New York. For many years, she was a dedicated elementary school teacher. She married the Rev. James W. Rush in 1952 in Fremont, N.C. and took pride in assisting him in many church leadership roles during his 33 years as a Methodist minister in the Virginia Conference. Throughout that time and until her illness, she taught Sunday School wherever they lived and on occasion, filled the pulpit in his absence. She was devoted to her son, to her husband, and to her mother, who lived with her until her death at age 95 in 1991. The family expresses deep gratitude to her friends for their kindnesses and especially to Al and Caren Cereghino of Forest, Va., for countless hours of Christian love and continuous acts of kindness throughou t the retirement years of Mrs. Rush and her late husband. A graveside service and burial by Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, Va., will take place Wednesday, January 24, 1996, at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville, Va. The Rev. Tom Murphy will officiate. A memorial service for Mrs. Rush will be held Saturday, January 27, 1996 at 1 p.m. at Centenary Methodist Church, Lynchburg, Va. and the Rev. James R. SANDERS, Robert Calvin, 79, of Rt. 1, Max Meadows, died Monday, January 22, 1996. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late William Dixon Sanders and Martha ``Patsy"" Peirce Sanders. He was a member of the Galena Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a Youth Advisor. He was a prominent retired Wythe County farmer and a U. S. Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific. Mr. Sanders was preceded in death by four sisters, Nannie Graham Sanders, Eliza Ann Sanders, Virginia Oewel Sanders and Elizabeth Sanders Andrews, three brothers, William Dixon Sanders Jr., James Graham Sanders and Charles Newell Sanders. He is survived by one sister, Katy Friel Sanders of Maryland; three brothers, David Peirce Sanders, George Gilmer Sanders, both of Wytheville, Malcolm Robinson Sanders, Starke, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Thelma C. Sanders, Lucy G. Sanders, both of Wytheville; four nieces and five nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 24, 1996, at 1 p.m. at the Galena Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Vaughan Earl Hartsell officiating. Interment will follow in the Graham-Robinson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. TAYLOR, Levi Warren, 74, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 20, 1996 at Community Hospital of Roanoke. He was born on Februa ry 14, 1921 in Roanoke County to the late Charlie R. and Rosie H. Taylor. He was preceded in death by one son, one sister, and four brothers. Mr. Taylor served his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He retired from the C & P Telephone Company. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Carey W. and Lenora Taylor; one daughter, Frances T. D. Motley; three granddaughters, Sheree Dickerson, Kenya Motley, and Leah Taylor, all of Roanoke; one sister, Mae T. WISEMAN, Dewey Wilson, 71, of Buena Vista, died Monday, January 22, 1996 at his home. He was born March 20, 1924 in Buena Vista, son of the late Percy Wiseman and Effie Patterson Wiseman. Dewey was retired from Burlington. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jake Jenkins of Buena Vista; one grandson, Chad Jenkins of Buena Vista; one sister, Mildred Houston of Richmond; two very special friends, Audrey Suthers and Cory Henson, both of Buena Vista.
