Glenvar whittled a 12-point deficit down in the fourth quarter Tuesday night but couldn't catch up in a 75-70 boys' basketball loss at Covington.
Glenvar (8-6 overall, 4-1 Pioneer District) never led but scored 34 points in the fourth quarter to create an interesting ending.
Covington (5-6, 4-1) forged a 16-point lead with strong second and third quarters.
The Highlanders sank 11 of 16 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and Covington was 11-of-22 from the free-throw line in the period.
Five Covington players scored in double digits, led by Dusty Roman and Boo Stewart with 16 points each. Brian Holloway scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Corey Willis paced the Highlanders with 17 points and nine rebounds. Eric East and James Williams each chipped in 16 points.
Roanoke Valley Christian 68, Lynchburg Christian 51: The Eagles pulled away with an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter as they rolled to a Virginia Independent Conference win over the Bulldogs.
Lynchburg Christian cut RVC's lead from seven to two with 3:50 left to go, but then the Eagles went on a tear. They scored 11 straight points and allowed the Bulldogs only one field goal during the last 3:50. RVC also sank 15 free throws in the final period.
Joel Nester led the Eagles (10-3, 6-2) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Simon Foster was the leading scorer with 16 in the win, and Eric Johnson had 14. including a pair of 3-pointers.
Andrew Pantana paced the Bulldogs with 17 points, a game-high. Lynchburg Christian fell to 4-4 in the conference.
Timberlake Christian 59, Roanoke Catholic 58: Timberlake Christian led by eight points at the half and held on for the one-point victory over the Celtics in the Virginia Independent Conference matchup.
Roanoke Catholic (2-9) made a field goal with two seconds left in the game to cut the lead to one. The Celtics fouled on the inbounds pass, and Timberlake missed the two free-throw attempts. After calling timeout, the Celtics couldn't manage to get off a shot. Brendan McCarthy led Roanoke Catholic with 14 points.
Lord Botetourt 63, North Cross 47: The Cavaliers jumped ahead early and held off the Raiders in a non-district game at North Cross.
Lord Botetourt (3-6) led 17-9 after one period, but North Cross (0-8) trimmed its deficit to one before a 6-0 run gave the Cavaliers a 31-24 halftime lead.
Lord Botetourt made 11 of 16 free throws to hold off North Cross down the stretch. Michael Gates led the Cavaliers with 17 points, Wesley Cox had 13 and Jason Hunt added 10.
Brian Whitaker scored 23 points and made five 3-pointers to lead the Raiders.
James River 72, Covington Boys Home 47: The Knights charged out to a 20-point halftime lead and never looked back as they swamped the Indians in a non-district contest in Covington.
Quincy Springs was the leading scorer for James River (8-4) with a game-high 15. Jason Perry added a dozen in the win.
Freddy Portillo scored 10 points and dished out six assists and Sean Riddick chipped in 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Covington Boys Home (8-8).
Girls
Roanoke Catholic 38, Timberlake Christian 36: Kristine Maxymiv scored a layup to give the Celtics a 37-34 lead in overtime and Whitney Campbell added a free throw with six seconds remaining as Roanoke Catholic nipped visiting Timberlake Christian in a Blue Ridge District matchup.
Christy Hinman was fouled had a chance to put it away for the Celtics with eight seconds remaining in regulation but couldn't convert.
Campbell scored all three of her points in overtime and Teresa Monsour got nine of her game-high 15 points from the free-throw line for the Celtics (4-6, 3-3).
Allison Dixon added eight rebounds for Roanoke Catholic, which shot 50 percent from the line (10-of-20).
Debbie Phillips scored 13 points to pace Timberlake Christian (4-6, 4-5), which shot just 6-for-15 from the line.
Grace Christian 61, North Cross 26: Krista Summers scored 26 points to lead Grace Christian (12-2, 8-2) past the Raiders in a Blue Ridge Conference game at Staunton.
Whitney Watson led North Cross (3-6, 3-3) with nine points and eight rebounds.
