NORTH WINS ECHL ALL-STAR GAME 10-7

The North rallied from a three-goal first-period deficit behind two goals from Johnstown's Don Parsons and four points from Erie's Glenn Stewart to beat the South 10-7 in the East Coast Hockey League All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Tallahassee, Fla.

Parsons, a late replacement for injured teammate Trevor Jobe, was named Most Valuable Player. Roanoke Express wing Tim Christian assisted a Parsons goal that made it 7-3 in the second period.

In the skills competition, Keith Morris of Columbus captured the speed-skating title with a lap of 13.5 seconds and teammate Aaron Boh registered the hardest shot at 89 mph.

The College Football Association and Hitachi announced Cave Spring High School will receive a $1,000 contribution in recognition of 1993 alumnus Tiki Barber, one of 24 football players named to the CFA/Hitachi Scholar-Athlete team.

Barber, who rushed for a school-record 1,397 yards this past season, is a commerce major with a 3.42 grade-point average after two years. He also participates in the mentor program at Greer Elementary School.

Wayne Norris has resigned as Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming coach, effective June 30 of this year.

Athletic director Dave Braine said Norris' responsibilities with the swimming program will be terminated immediately and Norris, who has coached the Hokies for eight seasons, will be assigned new duties in the athletic department for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Brian Bushon, who has been serving as diving coach, will assume the head coaching position for the remainder of this season.

Remaz Qamer defeated K.J. Hippensteel 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the final of the Mid-Atlantic USTA championship in Newport News on Tuesday.

Last year, Hippensteel, a Roanoke native, was the fourth-ranked 15-year-old, and Qamer was the sixth-ranked 14-year-old.

This was the first of six Mid-Atlantic USTA Championship events that will decide the qualifiers for the National USTA Championship Tournament.The next qualifier will be held in late February.
