HOYAS BEAT SYRACUSE BY 19

Allen Iverson scored 26 points and Othella Harrington added 23 on Wednesday night as sixth-ranked Georgetown beat No.17 Syracuse 83-64 in Landover, Md.

It was the Orangemen's third consecutive loss and fifth in seven games.

Georgetown (17-2 overall, 7-1 Big East) has won 14 of its past 15 games.

Otis Hill led Syracuse with 19 points and John Wallace had 17 for the Orangemen (13-5, 4-4).

Freshman guard Victor Page added 17 points for Georgetown.

No.2 Kentucky 82, Georgia 77: In Athens, Ga., Tony Delk scored 29 points and the Wildcats survived a furious Georgia comeback for their 15th straight victory.

The Bulldogs (11-5, 2-4 SEC) put together a 20-6 run to tie the score at 65 on Carlos Strong's 3-pointer with 8:43 to go. But Georgia could never overtake Kentucky (16-1, 6-0), which scored the next five points.

No. 7 Villanova 69, Providence 65: In Villanova, Pa., Jason Lawson had 18 points, including six in the final two minutes, and Kerry Kittles added 15 as the Wildcats rallied past Providence.

Villanova (15-3, 6-2 Big East) has won its past two; Providence (9-7, 2-6) has dropped three of four.

Derrick Brown had a career-high 29 points for the Friars.

No.11 North Carolina 82, Florida State 71: In Tallahassee, Fla., Dante Calabria scored 19 points and the Tar Heels (14-4, 5-1 ACC) won their ninth straight over the Seminoles.

Florida State (10-6, 2-4) got 16 points from Avery Curry. James Collins scored 15 points for FSU, reaching double figures for the 48th consecutive game.

No.12 Memphis 86, Alabama-Birmingham 77: In Memphis, Tenn., Lorenzen Wright scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Tigers to victory.

Wright led a parade of Tigers (13-3, 4-1 Conference USA) in double figures. Cedric Henderson and Mingo Johnson added 17 points each.

The Blazers (13-7, 3-3) were led by Carlos Williams' 27 points.

No.14 Penn State 87, No.19 Purdue 77: In State College, Pa., Pete Lisicky broke out of a shooting slump to score 13 points as the Nittany Lions took sole possession of first place in the Big Ten.

Purdue (14-4, 4-2 conference) led 33-32 late in the first half before Lisicky scored 10 consecutive points to put Penn State (14-1, 5-1) ahead to stay.

Maryland 65, No.18 Clemson 60: In College Park, Md., Johnny Rhodes had 17 points and Keith Booth scored six of his 17 in the final 4:01 to help the Terrapins hold off the Tigers.

Maryland led by 14 in the first half and by seven at halftime, but needed a late charge to rally past the Tigers. The Terps (9-6, 2-3 ACC) are 1-5 against ranked teams this season.

Terrell McIntyre scored a career-high 22 points for Clemson (12-3, 3-3).

Mississippi 82, No.21 Auburn 69: In Oxford, Miss., Keith Carter, one of only eight Mississippi players in uniform, scored 23 points as the Rebels took a big lead early and held on to upset the Tigers.

Even though four players were suspended, another had quit and two of those in uniform fouled out, Ole Miss (6-9, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) broke a five-game losing streak.

Georgia Tech 76, N.C. State 71: In Raleigh, N.C., Matt Harpring scored 18 points and picked up a key loose ball in the final seconds as the Yellow Jackets beat the Wolfpack.

Georgia Tech (12-8, 5-1 ACC) trailed by nine points early in the second half, but used a 12-0 run to get back into the game.

Todd Fuller led the Wolfpack (11-7, 1-5) with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Virginia Commonwealth 73, American 68: In Richmond, Patrick Lee had a career-high 20 points as the Rams rallied to beat the Eagles.

VCU (13-7, 6-1 Colonial) trailed 32-28 at the half, but Lee sparked a 17-5 run to give the Rams a 62-55 lead with 4:44 remaining.

VCU hit seven free throws down the stretch, including two by Lee with 5.3 seconds left.

Old Dominion 58, James Madison 45: In Harrisonburg, Odell Hodge scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Monarchs (9-9, 4-2 Colonial) beat the cold-shooting Dukes.

JMU (5-13, 1-6) was 0-for-9 from 3-point range in the first half and 1-for-10 in the second. The Dukes shot 28 percent (18-of-64) from the field.

S.C. State 83, Hampton 65: In Orangeburg, S.C., the Bulldogs got 20 points apiece from Roderick Blakney and Eric Fernandez in beating the Pirates.

Hampton shot 67 percent in the first half to take a 40-33 lead at intermission. Jafonde Williams, the nation's third-leading scorer, had 22 points for Hampton (4-14).

East Carolina 81, Richmond 65: In Greenville, N.C., former Patrick Henry High School standout Tim Basham scored 15 points as five Pirates reached double figures in a victory over the Spiders.

East Carolina (11-4, 4-2 Colonial) led by 18 points in the second half. Jonathan Baker scored 18 points to pace Richmond (4-12, 0-6).

George Mason 95, William and Mary 92: In Fairfax, George Redd made two free throws with 35.4 seconds remaining to lift the Patriots over the Tribe.

George Mason (7-9, 2-4 Colonial) went on an 18-3 run to open a 76-71 lead with 8:47 remaining. Curtis McCants had 32 points for the Patriots.

William and Mary (6-9, 2-4) got 28 points from Matt Verkey.

UNC Greensboro 73, Radford 68: In Greensboro, N.C., the Spartans made eight of 10 free throws in the final minute to hold off the Highlanders.

UNC Greensboro (11-4, 5-0 Big South) got 24 points from Brian Brunson and 17 from Scott Hartzell.

Jason Lansdown led Radford (9-9, 3-3) with 21 points.

Hampden-Sydney 97, Washington and Lee 75: Nate Schwab scored 20 points and blocked five shots to lead the Tigers to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in Lexington.

Hampden-Sydney (9-7, 4-6) also got 13 points from Ryan Odom and 11 each from Bryan Sheridan and Ryan Sharp. The Generals (2-15, 2-9) were led by Cam Dyer, who scored 20 points. Jon Coffman added 19.

Holy Cross 77, Fordham 64: In Worcester, Mass., Walter Brown scored 10 consecutive points in the second half to lead the Crusaders past the Rams (2-13), who led 53-41 with 12 minutes left thanks to 20 points from David Mascia.

Women

No. 7 Virginia 75, Maryland 46: In Charlottesville, Tora Suber scored 14 points to lead six Cavaliers in double figures.

Wendy Palmer and DeMya Walker had 10 points and 12 rebounds each for UVa (15-3, 6-1 ACC).

Maryland (8-8, 2-4 ACC) was led by Stephanie Cross, with 17 points.

Notes

HOKIES SOLD OUT: Virginia Tech's next two home basketball games - against Fordham and St. Joseph's - are sold out.

These are the first regular-season sellouts since a 1994 game against Louisville.

DUKE DEPLETED: A pair of athletes who play other sports at Duke have been added to the Blue Devils' depleted roster. Coach Mike Krzyzewski added 6-foot-5 senior Baker Perry, a track and field athlete, and 5-9 freshmen Jay Heaps, a soccer player.

REJECTION NOTICE: Lakeisha Phifer of St. Paul's blocked an NCAA-record 20 shots Tuesday in a 58-35 loss to Virginia Union in Richmond. Phifer, who averages 10.5 blocks a game, broke the NCAA women's record of 18 blocks set by Eastern Mennonite's Laurie Miller on Jan.21, 1995, against Emory and Henry.

PLAYER CONVICTED: A judge convicted suspended Richmond player Kevin Connor of hitting his former girlfriend. Connor is attending classes, but remains suspended from the team because of the assault.
