Food bank gets money for truck, driver
The United Parcel Service Foundation has given the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank $37,223 to buy a new, insulated delivery truck and to hire a part-time driver.
The food bank, which collects and distributes food to 425 agencies in Southwestern Virginia, will use the new truck in its Prepared and Perishable Food Rescue Program. The program was formed in October when the food bank combined three services that "rescued" prepared and fresh food that otherwise would be discarded by restaurants and delis.
The food bank has been picking up donated food and delivering it to agencies or making arrangements for the agencies to pick up the food. It also does "emergency rescues" when a restaurant has prepared too much food or a banquet has been cancelled.
Spokesman Mike Hepler said the program conducts rescues every day from Pizza Hut, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Food Lion in Salem, Country Cookin', Five-Boro Bagels, Lewis-Gale Hospital and some Kroger delis.
The food is removed from the restaurants and taken to soup kitchens, day care centers or homeless shelters.
Hepler said the truck will cost about $25,000. The money will also be used to purchase portable scales and plastic containers called cambro units that keep food hot or cold.
