President Clinton on Saturday declared parts of flood-stricken Virginia a major disaster area and ordered federal funds to supplement state and local recovery efforts.
Severe flooding caused by heavy rains and rapid snow melt began Jan. 18 in parts of the state. Counties eligible for aid are Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt, Shenandoah and Warren.
``I appreciate the quick response to my request for a federal disaster declaration,'' Gov. George Allen said. ``We can now move forward and begin the recovery process from this devastating flood.''
The assistance will be coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It can include grants to help pay for temporary housing needs, minor home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans also will be available to cover uninsured private and business property losses.
Ohio also was designated Saturday for assistance. States declared for federal flood aid earlier in the week were Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
