POLICE CHARGE MAN AFTER ARMED STANDOFF

A Pearisburg man was arrested Saturday night for allegedly shooting a rifle at town police officers during a four-hour standoff.

Marvin D. Kirk Jr., 27, was charged by Pearisburg police with three felony counts of attempting to kill a police officer. No one was injured.

Two officers went to Kirk's house about 7:40 p.m. Saturday to serve him with misdemeanor warrants, according to a news release from Pearisburg Police Sgt. J.C. Martin.

One shot was fired at the officers, then Kirk barricaded himself in the house, Martin said. Neighboring houses were evacuated, and a state police tactical team was called in.

Over the next couple of hours, four more shots were fired at officers from windows in Kirk's house, Martin said.

Kirk gave himself up shortly before midnight.
