Meeting her pupils' educational needs is not enough for 10-year educator Trina Gray, who teaches early childhood education at Buchanan Elementary School. "I've got to meet their emotional needs, too," she said.
Several Christmases ago Gray set up an angel tree in her classroom. She became aware of one child's wish for a pair of cowboy boots. Afraid his wish wouldn't come true, Gray arranged for a church group to make sure it did. They supplied boots and other toys for the children in that family. "It was a special Christmas for a child who might not have had one," she said.
"Trina Gray is a very special person with a heart of gold," said her nominator.
Gray said she tries to get to know the families of the children she teaches. "If I can get to know the families, I can help them gain information and give them ideas for home," she said.
Gray said teaching children with special needs is gratifying, but can be challenging because "you have to really get to know the children and make sure you're touching on each individual child's needs."
Married and the mother of Victoria, 17 months, Gray enjoys spending time with her daughter, reading, horseback riding and photography.
