ROANOKE'S JON MAHER and Tim Braun dominate taller opponents inside in a victory over Lynchburg.
With the players Roanoke College can rotate in and out of its backcourt, the Maroons don't always need a lot of points from their big men.
But with the big players Lynchburg College rotated in and out of its frontcourt Monday, the Roanoke duo of Jon Maher and Tim Braun had to rebound well.
Maher grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and Braun had 10 as the Maroons banged out an 83-63 victory over the Hornets at the Bast Center.
``They were rocks, as far as getting rebounds for us,'' said Page Moir, Roanoke's coach. ``We limited them to one shot pretty well. We didn't let them have anything easy.''
While Maher and Braun combined for 23 boards, Lynchburg's tandem of 6-7 Jason Ferguson and 6-9 Jason Johannes totaled 12.
When combined with the Hornets' 32 percent shooting performance, it was evident they not only didn't make the most of their scoring chances, they didn't have many chances in the first place. The Jasons were a combined 0-for-6 from the field and scored one point.
``When you see your post players miss layups close in, you know you're not performing,'' said Joe Davis, Lynchburg's coach. ``We were just waiting for them to put us away.''
The Hornets' loss dropped them to seventh place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with a 5-6 league mark and an 8-9 record overall. Roanoke solidified its third-place standing, moving to 8-4 in the ODAC and 13-4 overall.
Lynchburg had an early run to build a 19-11 lead with 10 minutes gone in the first half. Bryan Lightner, a shooting guard who played on the Maroons' junior varsity squad last season, accounted for seven of those points.
``We knew he could play,'' Moir said. ``We couldn't give him any easy ones off their passes.''
Roanoke had a series of easy layups in the second half, however, to build as much as a 25-point lead with 3:44 to play.
Braun led all scorers with 17 points and teammate Jason Bishop had 15. Otis Tucker III had 16 for Lynchburg and was joined in double figures by Lightner and Patrick Henry High School graduate Turk Smith, who each had 12.
