8 IS ENOUGH TO LIFT CAVE SPRING TO WIN

Cave Spring scored the last eight points to beat Franklin County 56-46 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball game Tuesday.

Cave Spring (9-8 overall, 4-1 district) made only two field goals in the fourth quarter - both by Chris Johnston - but the Knights were 11-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Franklin County (3-13, 1-3) dug itself an early hole, falling behind 19-8 in the first quarter and 28-16 at halftime. But the Eagles were 5-of-10 on 3-pointers in the third quarter to get back in the contest.

With 51 seconds left, the Eagles trailed by two, and K.C. Hancock was at the free-throw line. But he missed his attempt, and the Knights scored the last eight points.

Jeff Lang and Alex Phillips led Cave Spring with 16 points apiece.

Northside 72, Rockbridge County 44: The Vikings topped the Wildcats in a game littered with 3-point goals. The two teams combined for 14 3-pointers in the Blue Ridge District game in Lexington.

Justin Porterfield, Ben Peete and Spence Peters each hit three to lead Northside (9-5, 5-0). Porterfield and Peete each had 15 points, and Peters scored 13.

Jaymie Terrell hit two 3-pointers and, along with Luke Serber, led Rockbridge with 10 points. Rockbridge fell to 2-10, 1-4.

William Byrd 87, Alleghany 57: Chris Childress scored 33 points as the Terriers ripped the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game in Low Moor.

Mayo Wilson and Zach Bocock added 11 points apiece as William Byrd improved to 12-3 overall, 3-2 in the district.

Glenvar 82, Craig County 35: Everybody scored for the Highlanders in their Pioneer District win over the Rockets.

The Rockets (1-8, 0-6) committed 27 turnovers and were outrebounded 51-35.

James Williams scored 12 points to lead the Highlanders (12-5, 8-1), Corey Willis had 11 and Chris Evans 10. Willis also had eight rebounds.

Dewayne Crawford led the Rockets with nine points.

Carlisle 78, North Cross 58: Brian Redd ripped North Cross for 27 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Chiefs, ranked No.1 in the private school Division 2 poll, won in the Virginia Independent Conference.

Marty Stanley chipped in 13 and Lamont Franklin added 12 points for Carlisle (13-1, 10-0). Joseph McClinton had 10 in the victory.

Jeff Baetz led the Raiders (0-11, 0-7) with 12 points to go along with his 10 rebounds, and John Mull had seven points.

Parry McCluer 54, James River 41: The Knights led the favored Fighting Blues at halftime, but Parry McCluer broke through the defense and pulled away late.

James River had to foul in the fourth quarter and the Blues, ranked ninth in Group A, made 6-of-10 free throws to stretch their lead in the Pioneer District game held in Buchanan.

Parry McCluer (11-2) outscored the Knights (8-5, 5-5) 32-17 in the second half.

Quincy Springs had nine for James River. Garth Humphreys led the Blues with 14.

Girls

Cave Spring 88, Franklin County 37: Kristin Smith scored 18 points to lead four Knights in double figures as Cave Spring bombed the Eagles in Rocky Mount in a Roanoke Valley District matchup.

Jaclyn Banks added 17 points and Amy Causey and Katie Durker 10 apiece as Cave Spring (8-5 overall, 5-2) held Franklin County (2-12, 1-7) to four points in the opening quarter.

Roanoke Valley Christian 60, Roanoke Catholic 39: Gina Guthrie, a freshman guard, scored a season-high 29 points and added seven rebounds and seven steals as the Eagles whipped the Celtics in the Blue Ridge Conference.

Guthrie entered the game averaging 13.5 points per contest for RVC (11-2, 7-1), which is in first place in the league.

Rebecca Bryant added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

Whitney Campbell paced Roanoke Catholic (6-7, 6-4) with 12 points.
