Defensive driving course in Christiansburg
CHRISTIANSBURG - A defensive driving course will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 24, March 16 and 30, and April 13 and 27. The Driver Improvement Defensive Driving one-day course is authorized by the National Safety Council and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Five safe-driving points will be added to the DMV record of people who complete the course.
The fee is $75.

'I'm Thumbody' volunteers sought
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley is recruiting volunteers for "I'm Thumbody," a program for Montgomery and Giles County third-graders that helps develop self-worth and a sense of uniqueness.
Volunteers will attend a two-hour training session on Feb. 22 at the New River Valley Mall Community Room.

Low-cost vision screening
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Eye Care Optometric Center is offering a $1 vision screening and low-cost frames and lenses for children under 18 on Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The screening is for new or established patients.
The money collected will be sent to the Montgomery County Chapter of the American Heart Association.

WTOB announces weekly programming
CHRISTIANSBURG - WTOB Channel 2 will air the following programs next week.
Plunky Branch and Oneness present a tribute to African-American music at 7 p.m. on Monday.
"The Edge" showcases contemporary Christian music on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
Trumpet and piano music by Karl Stamitz, George Ernesco, Halsey Stevens and Dimitri Shostakovich will be featured on "Bachelder and Bryant: A Virginia Tech Faculty-Guest Recital" on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
"Animated Violence: How Does It Affect Children?" addresses the violent nature of video games and cartoons and its affect on children. The show airs on Feb. 8 at 7:45 p.m.
Have "Breakfast in Bed," a new live morning show on Friday mornings at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 9.

No Strings Attached performs Feb. 23
CHRISTIANSBURG - No Strings Attached will perform on Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m., at the Wesley Foundation, Roanoke and Otey streets in Blacksburg. Proceeds from the concert will be used for the Montgomery County Friends of the Library's summer reading program. Guest recital at Virginia Tech
BLACKSBURG - The Department of Music at Virginia Tech will present a guest artist recital featuring David Simms, guitar, accompanied by Pam Trent, piano, on Friday at 8 p.m. in Squires Recital Salon.
Simms, of Charleston, W.Va., teaches guitar at the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio.
Works featured in the recital are Federico Moreno-Torroba's Concierto Flamenco and Homenaje a la Seguidilla.

Volleyball Smash tourney rescheduled
PULASKI - The Pulaski County High School Volleyball Smash Tournament has been rescheduled to Saturday at the Pulaski County High School Gymnasium. Register 8:30-9:30 a.m. The first 18 teams registered are guaranteed to play. Cost is $10 per person.
Prizes include T-shirts for each player and trophies for division winners. Proceeds directly benefit the PCHS volleyball team.

Camp Va. Jaycee seeks workers
ROANOKE - Camp Virginia Jaycee, a residential summer camp for mentally retarded children and adults, has summer employment opportunities. The camp is near Roanoke. Facilities include cabins, a dining hall, pool and pond, stables, facilities for crafts, sports, music and nature, a miniature golf course and a Challenge Course.
Positions to be filled include program director, sports and recreation specialist, Challenge Course and nature specialist, riding and animal-care specialist, arts and crafts specialist, music specialist and pond specialist. Sessions run from Sunday through Friday with time off over weekends. Staff will be required to work one weekend and will have the opportunity to work extra weekends for additional pay. Staff training will begin the first weekend in June. Campers will arrive on June 9. Camp is 10 one-week sessions. Staff contracts end on Aug. 17.
