Jerry Siegel, who as a teen-ager helped create the Superman character that soared to glory in comic books, movies and television, has died of heart failure. He was 81.
Siegel died Sunday at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman for DC Comics said.
Siegel, a native of Cleveland, was a high school student when he and classmate Joe Shuster dreamed up the superhero from Krypton who became the Man of Steel. With Siegel as the writer and Shuster the artist, they created Superman's secret identity as a newspaper reporter.
