PULASKI COUNTY SCHOOL NEEDS REPORT TO BE MADE FEB. 8

Pulaski County residents can hear the information gathered by a steering committee on future school building needs at an open meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Pulaski County High School commons area.

The discussion will cover whether some schools in the county should be consolidated or closed, and whether remodeling is a better option than rebuilding.

The committee was commissioned by the county School Board and Board of Supervisors to get a handle on building needs. All but two of the county's schools are more than 40 years old and cannot handle the technologies needed in educational programs for the 21st century.

The School Board hired an architectural firm to study the facilities and make recommendations. Those recommendations will be presented at the meeting. Advice from the public will be sought on how to meet future school needs.

School officials are advertising the meeting in a variety of ways, including placing flyers at grocery stores to draw as much participation as possible.

"We're looking for as many as 500 or 600 people," Superintendent Bill Asbury said. He and School Board Chairman Lewis Pratt said the educational decisions rising out of the meeting will affect the county for decades to come.
