Virginia Tech, rapidly approaching the end of its recruiting year, has received an oral commitment from lineman Stan Brown from Florida High School in Tallahassee, Fla.
Brown, a 6-foot-4 1/2, 255-pounder, was an honorable-mention all-state selection. He picked Tech over Cincinnati, Western Kentucky and Troy State.
``He's going to be a big one,'' said Florida High coach Mike Hickman, noting that Brown will not turn 18 until May. ``He reminds me of a young colt. He's all I had up front.''
The Hokies are known to be recruiting two uncommitted players, running back Damone Boone from West Springfield High School and defensive back Donald Harris from H.D. Woodson in Washington. Boone, a Parade All-American, has narrowed his choices to Tech and Maryland.
Brown was the 27th player to commit to the Hokies, two of whom enrolled for the second semester and will count against Tech's 1995 quota. One or more freshmen may enroll in January 1997.
In other recruiting, it appears likely that Virginia will sign defensive back Johnny Ponder, a preseason All-American from Lee High School in Jacksonville, Fla. However, Division I-A neophyte Central Florida is still in the picture.
