A 63-year-old Bedford County man apparently died of exposure after getting lost on his way home from a restaurant Friday night.
Laurence Henry Whorley of Sedalia and his brother Connis, 69, left the Millstone Restaurant on Virginia 122 about 7 p.m. when it closed early because of the weather, said Lt. John McCane of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.
The brothers, who lived a little more than a mile from the restaurant, started walking home but got separated in the snowstorm, McCane said. The older brother continued home and went to bed.
When Connis Whorley woke up Saturday morning, he realized his brother had not made it home, McCane said.
Connis Whorley and a farmer spent most of the day looking for him, and the farmer discovered tracks on his property. He found Laurence Whorley lying under a pine tree just beyond a cow pasture.
The site is three-quarters of a mile from the restaurant and one-quarter mile from the brothers' home, McCane said.
An autopsy will be performed, but the cause of death appears to be exposure, he said. Temperatures dropped into the upper teens Friday night, and snow fell until Saturday morning.
