GIRL, 5, SHOT IN HEAD BY 3-YEAR-OLD BROTHER

A 3-year-old Grayson County boy accidentally shot his 5-year-old sister in the head Saturday morning, police said.

The girl was taken to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax shortly after 10 a.m., then was flown to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Grayson County Sheriff Jerry Wilson said Saturday night the girl was listed in serious but stable condition following surgery. He would not release the names of the children or their mother, who live in the Fairview section of the county, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The mother told police she was in another part of the house when she heard a gunshot and found her daughter.

Wilson said the boy was playing with a pistol when the gun went off. The sheriff said officials will meet with the commonwealth's attorney before deciding whether to file any charges.
