BLAIR, Helen Giles, 77, of Radford, passed away Saturday, February 3, 1996 at Radford Community Hospital. Survivors include her husband, Carl C. Blair of Radford; daughter, Mrs. Phyllis B. Brookman of Christiansburg; son, Carl C. Blair Jr. of Radford; two brothers, Claude A. Giles of Belspring and Harry R. Giles of Parrott; three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Bruce and Mrs. Geraldine Bruce both of Radford and Mrs. Cova Graham of New River; three grandchildren, William B. Brookman of Buford, Ga., John K. DILLON, Benjamin Clayton, 65, of Vinton, passed away Friday, February 2, 1996 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., after battling cancer gallantly for the past five years. The son of the late Benjamin Constantine and Lura Hannab ass Dillon of Wirtz, Va., he served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman for the 101st Airborne Division, the last year of his term stationed in Japan. After his discharge, he returned to the Roanoke Valley to graduate from National Business College, and later began employment in the cost accounting department of General Electric in Salem, from which he retired with 33 years' service. Upon retirement, he worked part-time for Dunman Floral Supply in Vinton. Mr. Dillon devoted his life to his two great loves -- his family and church work. He was a committed husband, father, and brother and was recognized in 1980 by the Vinton Chamber of Commerce as Father of the Year in the family activities category. He also served God faithfully during more than 40 years of church involvement, especially in the area of church music. A gifted musician, Mr. Dillon was Minister of Music at White Rock Baptist Church, Hardy, Va.; Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Bedford County, Va.; and Rainbow Forest Baptist Church, Troutville. In addition, he was guest music director for revivals at many other local Baptist churches, and a vocalist for weddings and funerals. He had also served as Sunday School teacher, deacon, church clerk, and treasurer. Mr. Dillon is survived by his wife of 43 years, Geneva Booth Dillon of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Becky D. and Todd Maxey of Vinton; daughter, Cindy Dillon of Greensboro, N.C.; sister, Elva D. Delong of Rocky Mount; sister and brother-in-law, Louise D. and Loyd Sink of Covington, Ohio; sister-in-law, Barbara P. (Mrs. Fred) Dillon of Vinton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Vinton Baptist Church 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 1996 with the Rev. Dr. William L. Ross officiating, assisted by the Rev. Kevin Meadows, the Rev. David Elks, the Rev. Wendell Patteson, and the Rev. William Hungate. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton, with the Rev. Philip Day and the Rev. Allison Echols officiating. DYSON, David Richard, 64, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, February 2, 1996. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, with Elder David A. Powell officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park.

FRANKLIN, Robert Otey, 94, of Blue Ridge, died Satur day, February 3, 1996. He was born in and was a longtime resident of Montvale, where he retired as a farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Colonial Baptist Church in Blue Ridge. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lura Creasy Franklin; a daughter, Jeanette (Haynes) Moore of East Bend, N.C.; two sons, James (Maria) Franklin of Lynchburg and Ray Otey (Marcheta) Franklin of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Janet Moore of Charlotte, N.C., Jerry (Kay) Moore of East Bend, N.C., Gary (Michelle) Franklin of Troutville, and Alan Franklin of Blue Ridge; a great-granddaughter, Amanda Franklin, and stepgreat-grandsons, Jeremy and Christopher Long. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 1996, with the Rev. Dr. Donald W. Eade and the Rev. Garvin Dykes officiating. HAYTER, Sterling Y., 75, of 117 16th St., N.W., Pulaski, died Sunday morning, February 4, 1996 at his home. He was born in Washington Co., Va. on January 18, 1921 and was the son of the late Clyde H. Hayter and Sallie Martin Hayter. He was a retired employee of Klopman Mills, Newbern, Va. Upon retirement, Mr. Hayter worked part time for the Virginia Wilbert Vault Company, Pulaski, Va. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army Air Corps in the European Theatre. Surviving are his wife, Ruth H. Hayter, Pulaski; one daughter, Ann H. Patton, Draper; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Victoria Hayter, Warminster, Penn.; three sisters, Shirley Fink, Pulaski, Cleo Mabee, Pulaski, Elaine Bohm, DeBerry, Fla.; four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, from the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Dublin, Va. with Pastor Terrie Sternberg officiating. The Pulaski VFW Post #1184 will conduct the military graveside rites. Visiting will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. STAFFORD, Janie Wysong, 97, of Pearisburg, died Sunday, February 4, 1996. Mrs. Stafford was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Stafford was born at Tazewell on November 15, 1898, and was a daughter of the late Samuel Henry Wysong and Harriet Compton Wysong. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Crow Stafford. She is survived by one son, James Carlyle Stafford of Hurricane, W.Va.; a daughter, Harriett Sue S. Johnson of Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 8, 1996, at 11 a.m., in the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Freddrick Long and the Rev. Judith Long officiating. THAXTON, Gerald Hammett, (``Buddy""), 62, of Rt. 2, Moneta, died Thursday, February 1, 1996 at his residence. He was born in Bedford County on January 7, 1934 a son of Iris McManaway Thaxton of Salem and the late Carl Hammett Thaxton. Gerald was an Army Veteran and was employed by Rubatex Corp. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Edward Muse of Kernersville, N.C. Thomas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane t Lynn and Daniel Thomas of Tennessee, and Pamela Ann and Earl Shrader of Christiansburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Kerri Thomas of Lexington and Wayne Thomas of Blacksburg; eight grandchildren; her stepfather, Tom Hathcock of Georgia, and several brothers and sisters. WORRELL, Cloa DeHaven, 87, of Woodlawn, passed away Friday, February 2, 1996. Born in Carroll County on November 2, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Harrison Powell DeHaven and Zella Fariss DeHaven. Mrs. Worrell was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest F. Worrell. She is survived by a da ughter and son-in-law, Guida Faye and Fred N. Tolley of Max Meadows; a brother, Elmo DeHaven of Hillsville; two grandsons, Gary Tolley of Richmond and Dan Tolley of Sterling, and three great-grandchildren, Neil, Katherine and Joseph Tolley. Mrs. Worrell was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church and Hillsville Chapter 71 O.E.S. Sweeney of Troutville; four daughters, Zona Lee Dobbins, Barbara Breeding and Jane Gordon of Roanoke, and Joyce Sutphin of Christiansburg; four brothers, Ellett Peters of Harrington, Wash., Herman Peters of Stockton, Calif., Ray Peters of Floyd and Jack Peters of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Alice Page of Roanoke, and Eva Sweeney, Ocie Rakes and Peggy Harris of Floyd; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 1996, at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, with the Rev. Lynn R. Riddle officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery.
