A 25-year-old Northwest Roanoke man has been charged with tying up a man and locking him in a closet late Saturday, then taking money from him.
Jonardo Paxton, 25, of Gainsboro Drive Northwest remained in Roanoke City Jail on Monday without bond on charges of abduction and robbery.
Police gave this account of what happened:
Roger Lee Baker of Cannady Road Northeast said he went to Lincoln Terrace housing development looking for his van, found it on Bunche Drive Northwest and knocked on the door of a residence to get his keys. Police said it was unclear how Baker knew to go to that location.
When he asked for the keys, Baker said, a man beat him with a stick, tied him up, blindfolded him and kept him in a closet for 41/2 hours. During that time, Baker said, the man forced him at gunpoint to sign bank withdrawal slips and took $30 cash from him.
Baker said he escaped, stopped a patrol officer in the housing development and described the car in which the man drove away. A patrol officer stopped a car that fit that description on Orange Avenue Northeast.
Baker later identified Paxton, one of the men in the car, as his assailant, police said.
Police are looking for a second man in connection with the incident, but it wasn't clear from a news release how he was involved.
