Notes
COACH APOLOGIZES: Long Beach State coach and former Virginia assistant Seth Greenberg has apologized to two New Mexico State students who claimed he slandered them and violated their civil rights by having security officers remove them from a game between the two schools.
A copy of Greenberg's Feb.1 letter to Charles Sallee and Craig Sullivan was released Monday by Alvin Sallee, father of one of the students and a New Mexico State professor of social work who sits on the school's athletic council.
The students last week demanded a public apology from Greenberg after they were escorted from the Pan American Center during the final minutes of the nationally televised game Jan.22.
Greenberg had complained to game officials that students sitting near the Long Beach State bench had directed racial slurs at his players. The coach identified the students he said were involved.
Sallee and Sullivan denied it, saying they had heckled Greenberg only about his balding head.
WVU FLAP SUBSIDES: A sports editor banned from a West Virginia news conference will not be prevented from attending the team's future media opportunities, the university's athletic director said.
WVU (8-11) lost 84-63 on Saturday to Boston College, its worst home defeat since a 102-80 setback to Westminster in 1954-55.
Afterward, coach Gale Catlett refused to attend the news conference if Bob Pastin, sports editor of the Dominion Post of Morgantown, was there. Pastin agreed to leave, and the news conference went on as scheduled.
It was the Mountaineers' first home game since Pastin wrote a column Jan.27 that questioned the direction of the program.
RESCHEDULED: The University of Virginia women's basketball game against Wake Forest, originally scheduled for this past Sunday, has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb.19 at University Hall in Charlottesville.
