New bid competes for dialysis unit
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A tug of war over W.R. Grace & Co.'s health care unit is expected to continue today, although it did not appear it would lead to higher bids.
Chicago-based Baxter International said Monday it will talk to Grace shareholders and analysts to suggest that its $3.8 billion bid for National Medical Care Inc. is less risky than one approved by Grace's board Sunday. But the company said it has no plans to raise the offer.
Grace had agreed to sell National Medical to Fresenius A.G. of Germany in a complex deal analysts valued at $4.1 billion to $4.5 billion. The deal would combine the world's largest operator of kidney disease treatment centers with Fresenius's kidney dialysis machines and supplies to create Fresenius Medical Care.
