Fire destroyed a Stuckey's store and restaurant Monday afternoon off Interstate 81 in Wythe County near the Wythe-Pulaski border.
It took five fire departments nearly four hours to cool down the fire, reported about 2:30 p.m. Max Meadows Fire Chief Mike Farris, who also is the county's fire commissioner, said firefighters would have to be stationed there during the night to make sure it did not flare up again. Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
Foam had to be sprayed over gasoline pumps to keep them from exploding, and the Virginia Department of Transportation had to be called in to work on the ice formed along roads from water runoff. Farris said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
