AKERS, Bessie Weeks, 95, of Floyd, passed away Monday, February 5, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew C. Akers. She is survived by three sons, Harless F. Akers, Riner, Curtis W. Akers, Stokesdale, N.C., Grover H. Akers, Floyd; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Trail, Mrs. Bruce Sweeney, both of Floyd; one brother, Kellie Weeks, Roanoke ; four sisters, Mrs. Della Duncan, Mrs. Ruby Lester, both of Riner, Mrs. Ethel Dulaney, Floyd, Mrs. Goldie Wheeling, Christiansburg; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Akers and the Rev. Glenn Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in Reidsville Cemetery. BYERS, Anne Cooke, 72, of Lexington, died Monday, February 5, 1996. She was the wife of Col. William F. Byers and the daughter of the late Dr. Robert Powell Page Cooke and Nell Jones Cooke. Mrs. Byers was a former employee of Washington & Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. She was an active member of St. Paul's Anglican Church and the Blue Ridge Garden Club, a volunteer with the Literacy Volunteers of the Rockbridge Area and numerous other church and civic organizations. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, John Esten Byers, Christchurch, Va.; and a daughter, Sally Page Whitlock, Reston, Va. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church at 11 a.m. Friday, February 9, 1996. Interment will be at a later date. DAVIS, Arline Francis 78, of Glendale, Arizona, formerly of Bedford County, Va. died Friday, February 2, 1996. She was employed as a Sales Clerk for a Retail Department Store in Glendale. She is survived by two daughters, Maureen Davis, Glendale, Ariz., Sharon Lingo, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Virginia Patterson, Roanoke; three brothers, Herbert Smith, Richard Smith, James ""Boots"" Smith, all of Roanoke; two grandchildren. DILLON, James Edward, Sr., 69, of Bowman Avenue, Salem, died Monday, February 5, 1996. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a good neighbor. Mr. Dillon was a retired machinist from the General Electric Roanoke Service Shop. He was preceded in death by a son, David Dillon. Survivors include his wife, Florence Flowers Dillon; sons, James Edward Dillon Jr., Gary Lee Dillon and his sweetheart Bridgett Beckner, and Mark Wayne Dillon and wife Patricia (``Trish""); grandchildren, Billy Ray Dillon, Zachary Moran, Justin Dillon, Hunter Dillon and Summr'e Dillon; his mother-in-law, Mary Flowers Reed; brothers, McKinley Lee Dillon, A. HEFT, Harriet Boyce, 89, of Salem, formerly of Santa Barbara, Calif., died Tuesday, February 6, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital. A native of Ramsey, N.J., she was a member of St. Paul's Episcop al Church in Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray C. Heft; a daughter, Kathryn C. Fite, and a grandson, Robert R. Whipple. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mildred C. and Robert R. Whipple of Clarkdale, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Gail P. Walkley of Salem and Margie C. Mallin of Olympia, Wash.; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Marian Hugle of Maryland, Ada Buglino of Columbia, S.C., and Anne Peck of Idaho. LEE, Mildred E., 66, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, February 6, 1996. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Clark; a brother, Donald Evans. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Barry R. and Linda M. Lee, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Charles J. Lee, Vanessa R. Lee; a sister, Mary Preston, Vinton; three brothers, William Evans, Tom Evans, James Evans, all of Roanoke. McCARTNEY, Col. Robert W., U. S. Army, Retired, of Blacksburg, passed away at a Richmond Retirement Community on Tuesday, February 6, 1996, at the age of 80. Born in Monterey, Calif., Colonel McCartney was raised in a military family and resided in many areas of the United States and foreign countries. He earned his baccalaureate at Tulane University and had graduate degrees from Louisiana State University and George Washington University. He entered the military service in 1941, leaving the library faculty of Tulane to become a Second Lieutenant in the field artillery. He served throughout World War II in the European Theatre with the Fifth Infantry Division of the First and Third Armies. He served in five campaigns and was awarded the Soldiers Medal, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart for a wound received in the vicinity of Metz, France. After World War II, he was a member of the Occupation Forces in Japan, served in the Pentagon, commanded an artillery battalion in Thule, Greenland, had numerous stateside assignments, and commanded the 35th Artillery Group in Bamberg, West Germany. Colonel McCartney attended the Army War College and served on the faculty of the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. His last military assignment was Chief of Staff, Army Intelligence Command. During these post-war years, he received the Army Commendation Medal with cluster and the Legion of Merit. After retirement from the Army, Mr. McCartney joined the faculty of Virginia Tech as head of the Acquisitions Department of the University Libraries. During his 10 years in this position, he was most instrumental in the vast expansion of the collections of the University Libraries. Since retirement from Tech in 1981, he continued to enjoy the environs of Blacksburg, his only ``Home Town."" He was active in the Blacksburg Lions Club, the Blacksburg Sports Club, St. Mary's Catholic Community, the New Dimensions Program at Tech, and the Lost Chord Club of Southwest Virginia (American Cancer Society). He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay (Catherine E.), and by three children, Robert W. Jr. of Denver, Colo., Henry A. of Rochester, N.Y., and Catherine Llaneza of Richmond. Also, there are five wonderful grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Boone of Marietta, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. A mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Blacksburg, at 11 a.m. Friday, February 9, 1996, with Father Donald Lemay officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choosing. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 8, 1996.

OWEN, Nell Lyon, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, February 5, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Harold Owen. She is survived by a son, William Rodney Owen, Roanoke; a nephew, Neil Austin Wilson, Louisville, Ky. RICHARDSON, Bernice ""Bunn,"" of Salem passed away Tuesday in a Salem hospital. She is survived by her husband, James Richardson; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hall, Eden, N.C., Irene Boone, Salem, Shelva Long, N.J.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Pal and Suzi Richardson, Odenton, Md. and Ronnie Richardson, Salem; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Dee Diamond and Minnie Ennis; and many friends. She was a long-time member of The Fort Lewis Christian Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 1996 at 10 a.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Reverend William Murdock officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. STEFFENSEN, Charles J., 27, of Fort Hood, Texas, formerly of Redding, Calif., died Saturday, January 27, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Eby Steffensen. Both have been serving in the U. S. Army as Electronics Specialists at Fort Hood, Texas. He is also survived by his parents, Delores Hastings and Dean Steffensen; brothers, Jacob and Chelsie; sister, Debbie, all of California; his in-laws, Dr. and Mrs. John L. Eby Jr., Roanoke; brother-in-law, Justin Eby. A military memorial service will be held at the Fort Hood Chapel on Thursday, February 8, 1996. TOMLIN, Helen Louise, 84, of Buena Vista, died Monday, January 5, 1996 at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Rockbridge County on August 8, 1911, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Blanche Camper Southers. She was the owner and operator of Southers Grocery. She was a member of the First Brethren Church and Senior Citizens Group. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Tomlin and two children, Marie Dorey and Blanche Plogger. She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Scott, Buena Vista, Edith Mae Breedlove, Cumberland; five sons, James W. Tomlin, Leonard Tomlin, Bennie Tomlin and Maynard Tomlin, all of Buena Vista, Lewis Tomlin, Raphine; two step children, Mary Allen and Beulah Ramsey, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Edith Burch, Buena Vista; two brothers, Kenneth Southers and Herman Southers, both of Buena Vista; thirty four grandchildren; fifty eight great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Ramsey and the Rev. Charles Bearinger. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. WELLS, Leonard Lee, 69, of Richmond and formerly of Roanoke, VA. died Sunday, February 4, 1996. Mr. Wells retired from the Roanoke City School System. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ruth J. Wells, Richmond; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte W. and Homer Nester, Glen Allen, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, William D. and Vickie Wells, Lynchburg; five granddaughters; and one great granddaughter; two sisters, Lois Peters, Roanoke and Cecile Nelson, Lexington, N.C.; one brother, Kenneth Wells, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Aaron J. Rummage officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park.
