WRESTLERS FALL IN REGIONALS

Several Franklin County wrestlers were dominant performers, but it was not enough as the Eagles lost 40-23 to Stonewall Jackson in the Northwest Region Dual championship held at Franklin County High School.

Despite losing, Franklin County advances to the state tournament this weekend at Atlee High School in Richmond. The top two teams in each region go to the state tournament.

The Eagles' Bryan Jones remained unbeaten in the 152-pound division on the season, pinning Kevin Lawler in 4:56.

Stacy Menefee and Trung Nguyen won in the 103- and 112-pound divisions, respectively, with Menefee defeating Donnie Periera by technical fall 20-5 and Nguyen pinning Wes Evans in 1:31. Bruce Cobbs was the only other Eagle to win, pinning Tony Messenger in the heavyweight division.

``We lost some really close matches which we thought we would win and that was the difference,'' Eagles assistant coach Jim Worley said, ``Hopefully, we can win the state championship. That has been our goal all year and if you don't go with that goal, you may as well not go.''
