BEDFORD COUNTY MAN SHOT AT WOMAN'S HOME

A Bedford County man was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday at the home of a Bedford County woman who said he forced his way in.

Fred W. Childress Jr., 42, of Huddleston, was shot once with a .38-caliber revolver fired by Claude Franklin Davis III of Rocky Mount, according to Lt. John McCane of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office.

Childress was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released.

No charges have been filed in the incident, McCane said, though the case has been forwarded to the commonwealth's attorney's office for consideration.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m., McCane said, after dispatchers received a call from Jackie Basham, 33, of Huddleston, who said that Childress was at the front door of her home and would not leave. Basham said she knew Childress.

A deputy was on the way to the residence off Virginia 734, McCane said, when Basham called again and said that Davis had shot Childress after Childress forced his way in.
