CARTER, William Edgar, 84, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 1996. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

CARTER, William Edgar, 84, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, February 7, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 28, 1911 in Bedford County, a son of the late William Ernest Carter and Osie Stinnette Carter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lula Williamson and two brothers, Raymond Carter and Roy Carter. He was a retired employee of American Viscose and was a member of the Quaker Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ossie Overstreet Carter; a son and daughter-in-law, William Cecil and Janice K. Carter, Bedford; a daughter and son-in-law, Beatrice and Kenny Parks, Bedford; three sisters, Cleo Frazier, Newport News, Offie Karnes, Roanoke, Sallie McGuire, Bedford; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, February 9, 1996 from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by the Rev. Wayne Murphy. Interment will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford and other times at the residence of the son, William Cecil Carter. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Moneta Lifesaving Crew.

CLINE, Virginia Yonce, 73, of Wytheville, died Monday, February 5, 1996 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was retired supervisor from the United Inter-Mountain Telephone Company. She is survived by her husband, Grover Cline of Wytheville; one daughter, Donna Sue Hollingsworth of Burkburnett, Texas; one stepdaughter, Judy Fletcher of Vansant; one stepson, James Cline of Midlothian; one sister, Patsy Yonce of Comers Rock; three brothers, James Rex Yonce of Willoughby, Ohio, Dale Yonce of Comers Rock, and Roger Yonce of Elk Creek. Five grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be Friday, 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Fred Jennings and the Rev. Rick Eminhizer, with the interment to follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Rural Retreat. The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home Thursday, February 8, 1996, from 7 to 9 p.m. The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

COLETRAIN, Frances Mabel, 56, of Galax, died Tuesday, February 6, 1996. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday, Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel, Galax.

CROCKETT, Louise Morgan, 79, of Fort Washington, Md., and formerly of Elliston, passed away Friday, February 2, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick L. Crockett. Survivors include her daughter, Andrea Crockett-Robinson and her husband, David, of Fort Washington; one sister, Vernice Morgan Campbell and her husband, Rev. G. G. Campbell, of Richmond; two granddaughters and one great-gr anddaughter; sisters-in-law, Frances Morgan and Maggie Morgan, both of Roanoke. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Elliston. The Rev. G. G. Campbell will officiate with the interment in the church cemetery. DAVIS, John Randolph, 91, of the 1000 block of Covington Lane, Norfolk, died Tuesday, February 6, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital. Mr. Davis was a native of Roanoke and a resident of Norfolk for most of his life. He was a member, register and 6 term Vestryman of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk, and its former Scout Master of Troop #32 for 15 years. He also established St. Andrews Adult Bible Class and taught Sunday School for the church. He was a 1929 War School graduate of the University of Virginia Law. He practiced law for 43 years, originally with the law firm of Phipps and Davis, and subsequently with Davis and Boyd. He retired from the firm of Boyd and Boyd PC, Law Firm in 1970. Mr. Davis was a member of Wally Byam Caravan Club International and charter member of the Virginia Unit and the Tidewater Virginia Unit. He was past president of the Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park. Mr. Davis continued working on the Tidewater Boy Scout Council. He was a member of the Operating Board of The Episcopal Church Home for many years. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Elinor Dobke Davis of Norfolk; four daughters, Mary Elizabeth Barnes and her husband, Robert, of Bethlehem, Pa., Elna Ronile Haught and her husband, Larry, of Freeport, Pa., Martha Lillian Rogers and her husband, Daniel, of Richmond, Karen Elaine Harvey and her husband, Lt. Col. John Harvey, U.S.A., Ret., of St. Augustine, Fla.; a son, John Randolph Davis Jr. and his wife, Marion, of Colonial Heights; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nep hews. A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, November 9, 1996 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles Joy. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church or The American Cancer Society, Tidewater Chapter. DILLON, James Edward, Sr.,(``Whitey"") 6 9, of Bowman Avenue, Salem, died Monday, February 5, 1996. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a good neighbor. Mr. Dillon was a retired machinist from the General Electric Roanoke Service Shop. He was preceded in death by a son, David Dillon. Survivors include his wife, Florence Flowers Dillon; sons, James Edward Dillon Jr., Gary Lee Dillon and his sweetheart Bridgett Beckner, and Mark Wayne Dillon and wife Patricia (``Trish""); grandchildren, Billy Ray Dillon, Zachary Moran, Justin Dillon, Hunter Dillon and Summr'e Dillon; his mother-in-law, Mary Flowers Reed; brothers, McKinley Lee Dillon, A. W. Dillon and Charles Dillon, and sisters, Louise Davis, Bethel Rutledge and Alice Lyden. ENGLISH, Tessie Beatrice, 39, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 1996, in a local hospital. A native of Roanoke, she was a daughter of the late Hampton and Pearl Anderson. She is survived by two dau ghters, Laura Anderson and Oquintessa English of Roanoke; one son, Omark English of Roanoke; eight sisters, Betty Dent, Jean Ellis, Gloria Davis, Bertha Anderson, Carolyn Fisher, Laura Calloway and Rose M. Carter of Roanoke and Brenda Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Hampton Anderson Jr. of Roanoke; her stepmother, Mrs. Jessie M. Anderson of Roanoke; six brothers-in-law; a devoted friend, Ray Buckner of Roanoke, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 10, at 11 a.m. at Fizer Funeral Home, with Pastor F. D. Sweetenberg officiating. Interment will follow at Williams Memorial Park. FRAZIER, Delmar Gray, 56, of Austinville, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 1996 in Austinville. He was born February 15, 1939 in Carroll County, son of the late Delmar Tipton and Amanda Jane Primm Frazier. Mr. Frazier was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Frazier. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Miles Caviness, Draper; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Elizabeth Frazier, Galax, Michael Joe and Betty Frazier, Austinville; two brothers, Howard Pierce Frazier, Austinville, and Bernie Frazier, Austinville; one sister, Verlene Dalton, Austinville; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 9, 1996 at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with Brother Robert Caviness and Brother Olen Alexander officiating. FRITTS, Maie Louya, 82, of Lexington, N.C., died Tuesday, February 6, 1996 in Buena Vista Nursing Home a fter an extended illness. She was born in Davidson County on December 29, 1913, to Jasper Louya and Maggie Leonard Louya. Her husband, John Richard Fritts, preceded her in death on November 9, 1988. She is survived by a son, Carlton K. Fritts of Concord, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Rod (Rickey Jo) Green of Roanoke; a brother, Archie Louya of Thomasville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Jesse Fitzgerald of Linwood, N.C.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ, where she was a member, by the Rev. Lloyd Spencer and the Rev. Lynwood Hubbard. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ Cemetery. GRIGGS, William Arthur Sr., 58, of Richmond, and formerly of Pearisburg, died Monday, February 5, 1996 at MCV in Richmond. Born in Lackey, W.Va., he was a son of the late William Woodrow and Eva Gillespie Griggs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a retired construction worker. Surviving are a son, William Arthur Griggs Jr. of Richmond; two daughters, Angie Blackburn of Chesterfield, and Shelia Brown of Henrico County; five brothers, Daniel Lee Griggs, Donald Ray Griggs, Roger Victor Griggs, all of Pearisburg, Lonnie Gene Griggs of Shawsville, Lyle Dean Griggs of Christiansburg; four sisters, Mary Frances Johnson of Pearisburg, Dreana Lee Hamblin of Trigg, Sylvia Darlene Mustard of Dublin, Patricia Ann Robbins of Christiansburg; eight grandchildren, William A. Griggs III, Rachael Griggs, Brandon Griggs, Jeffrey Edwards, Steven Blackburn, Annette Blackburn, Brian Blackburn, and Amy McFadden. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 9, 1996, at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
