IRS program gives help on tax returns

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, is offering free help with tax returns at several local libraries.

VITA volunteers will help disabled people, those who can't speak English and older taxpayers fill out basic tax forms.

The program operates at the following libraries:

* Raleigh Court, 217 Grandin Road S.W., Thursdays, 6-9 p.m. For more information, call 981-2240.

* Williamson Road, 3837 Williamson Road N.W., Thursdays, 1-4 p.m., and Fridays, 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, call 981-2340.

* Hollins, 6624 Peters Creek Road N.W., Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. For more information, call 561-8024.

* Vinton, 800 Washington Ave., Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. For more information, call 345-8153.

* Roanoke County main branch, 3131 Electric Road S.W., Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. For more information, call 772-7507.

Red Cross offers help to flood victims

Families with flood-related needs who live in the Roanoke area, including Botetourt and Craig counties, should contact the Red Cross.

The Red Cross can help with emergency needs such as food, clothing, shelter, replacement of furniture and household items and assistance with rent.

The Roanoke Valley chapter is offering a 60-page booklet, "Repairing Your Flooded Home," at no cost. The booklet addresses topics such as drying out your home, restoring utilities, cleaning floors, closets, shelves, and rebuilding and floodproofing your home.
