Brian Whitaker drilled four free throws in the last 23 seconds as North Cross held on to defeat Timberlake Christian 65-63 in a Virginia Independent Conference game for its first win of the season.
Whitaker, who finished with 22 points, hit two free throws with 23 seconds left to give the Raiders (1-13 overall, 1-7 VIC) a 63-61 lead. Timberlake Christian then tied the score on a layup by Tim Spear, who finished with a game-high 29 points.
Whitaker then hit two more free throws with eight seconds left for the winning points. Timberlake Christian (9-6, 5-5) had a chance to tie, but turned the ball over with one second left.
Jon Mull added 10 points for the Raiders and Jeff Baetz grabbed 11 rebounds.
Timberlake Christian also got 13 points from Paul Fitzgerald and 10 from Wyatt Craig.
Roanoke Valley Christian 75, Roanoke Catholic 61: Mark Arbogast scored 16 points and made four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles over the Celtics in a Virginia Independent Conference game at Catholic.
Mark DeLong added 14 and Eric Johnson scored 13 for Roanoke Valley Christian (13-4, 7-2).
Terron Reed led Catholic (3-11, 2-6) with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Staunton River 78, Altavista 65: Hunter Hoggatt scored 30 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a Seminole District victory over the Colonels in Altavista.
Hoggatt, who used to attend Altavista, led four players in double figures as Staunton River rebounded from an 11-4 deficit in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles (6-9, 6-9) outscored the Colonels (12-4, 12-4) 33-12 in the third period.
Kelvin Martin added 16 points for Staunton River, while Jeff English added 12 and Lance Price 10.
Dennis Brown paced the Colonels with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Travis Crider had 20 points.
Grayson County 60, Bland 52: Wes Self scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the second quarter as Grayson County cruised past visiting Bland in a Mountain Empire District game for its 15th consecutive win.
The Blue Devils (15-0, 5-0), ranked second in the Associated Press' Group A poll, started slow, but opened a 10-point halftime lead by outscoring Bland 22-6 in the second quarter.
Bland made a late run in the fourth quarter behind Jamie Dunn, who scored all eight of his points in the final period. The Rockets were led by Lee Meadows, who scored 12.
Girls
Roanoke Catholic 42, Timberlake Christian 38: In Lynchburg, the Celtics capitalized on several Timberlake turnovers as Roanoke Catholic escaped with a Blue Ridge Conference win.
Timberlake turned the ball over 14 times to the Celtics' seven, and Roanoke Catholic also stole the ball seven times.
Teresa Monsour was the leading scorer for the Celtics (8-7 overall, 7-4 district) with a game-high 14 points. Whitney Campbell and Christy Hinman each scored 11 points and combined to pull down 15 rebounds.
Debbie Phillips led Timberlake (4-9, 3-9) with 11 points.
