NATIONAL BUSINESS College is no fly-by-night operation. It has operated in the Roanoke Valley for years, and has state and federal approval to offer degrees.
Nevertheless, the General Assembly shouldn't add NBC to the program that awards tuition-assistance grants to Virginians attending private colleges and universities in the state.
For one thing, NBC is a for-profit enterprise. For another, though accredited by the Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, NBC is not accredited by the more established Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In both regards, NBC differs both from the private institutions currently eligible for the TAG program and from the state's public colleges and universities.
To add NBC to the program, in other words, would be to bring a different kind of animal into a tent where fiscal room already is tight. Worse, it could open the door for other institutions that depart even further from current TAG standards.
