TOKYO - China's top sports official suggested that China might boycott the Summer Olympics in Atlanta if high-ranking Taiwan government officials are allowed to attend, Kyodo News reported.

If China stays home from the Olympics, it would mar the 1996 Games' perfect-attendance plans. For the first time ever, all 197 countries invited to the Games had accepted.

Mummy's leg fixed in ancient times

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The lower leg of a 2,600-year-old Egyptian mummy was apparently reattached in ancient times with a sophisticated screw, the first known example of such an operation, museum officials said Friday.

The recipient was probably dead at the time of the reattachment, which may have been performed to make the body suitable for the afterlife, said Julie Scott, director of the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.

The 9-inch metal screw was discovered last year when researchers X-rayed the six mummies at the museum.
