Home video is really not the best place to appreciate the late Gene Kelly's wide-ranging talents as actor, dancer, choreographer and director. Anyone who saw the restored version of "An American in Paris" at last year's Virginia Festival of American Film knows that it's a big-screen experience. So are the other two films that Kelly will always be remembered for - "On the Town" and "Singin' in the Rain." Even though they were made as the big-budget musical was nearing the end of its cycle, they're still wonderful entertainment - quickly paced, smart and funny.
So, those who haven't seen Kelly's work in its proper medium should wait for a revival or more festival reappearances. In the meantime, here are a few of his best that are available on videotape:
