PAYNE, Mary Lucy, 63, of 145 Baldwin St., Bedford, passed away Friday, February 9, 1996 in Oakwood Manor in Bedford. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 13, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Bedford Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Fairmont Cemetery, Bedford. Arrangements by Bedford Funeral Home.

POOLE, Gertrude Miller, 94, of Columbia, S.C., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, February 9, 1996. Mrs. Poole was born in Little Mountain, S.C., on July 11, 1901, the daughter of the late Ira Albert and Inez Derrick Miller. She graduated from Greenville College, Greenville, S.C., with a degree in Business Administration. She was the widow of William L. Poole, having married him on October 28, 1920. Mrs. Poole was a charter member of the Roanoke Auxiliary of United Commercial Travelers (UCT), founde d in 1939. She received her first honors as a Past Senior Counselor of the Roanoke Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Grand Auxiliary of the UCT, comprised of auxiliaries from Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. In 1957, she received honors as a Past Grand Counselor, and served as Supreme Chaplain in 1961. She is a Past Supreme Counselor of the Supreme Auxiliary, having served as Treasurer, receiving those honors in 1970. The Supreme Auxiliary is an international auxiliary which includes the United States and Canada. The honor of Past Supreme Counselor is the highest honor awarded in the United Commercial Travelers. Mrs. Poole also was a member of Electa Chapter #33, Order of the Eastern Star; was a member of the Thursday Morning Music Club, and continued her membership in a local bridge club, playing until she was 92 years old. She was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as a circle leader for many years and was an active life member in the United Methodist Women's group and was a member of the Amy Meeker Sunday School Class. Surviving are her brother, Hayne C. Miller; a foster daughter, Sue W. Miller; her granddaughter, Stephanie M. Mealing, all of Columbia, S.C.; two great-grandsons, Bret Mitchell Mealing of Columbia and Jay Derrick Mealing of Hilton Head, S.C., and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Monday, February 12, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Walter Lockett Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Roanoke Valley SPCA or the Mae E. Tisdale Scholarship Fund of the UCT. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
PRICE, Herman, 70, of 2510 Waterlick Road, Forest, died Friday, January 9, 1996 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Frances Smith Price. Born in Honaker, Va. September 28, 1925, he was a son of the late Elizabeth Taylor Price and Sylvester Price. Mr. Price was retired from carpentry work with Bill W. Schley. He was a U. S. Army veteran who served during World War II and a member of Timberlake Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert (Bobby) Price of Forest and John (Eddie) Price and his wife, Teresa, of Lynchburg; three daughters, June E. Price of Roanoke, Anita K. Price of Bedford and Carol P. Tucker and her husband, Ronnie, of Lynchburg; three sisters, hester McGuire of Tazewell, Kathleen Lester of Bluefield, W. Va. and Tinie Burress of Bluefield, Va.; three grandsons, Dwayne E. Price and his wife, Karen, Drew and Dan Tucker, all of Lynchburg; one great-grandson, Coley Price of Lynchburg; four special friends, Calvin Cox, Richard Durham, Bob Layne and Jim Wilson and the Tom Ball family members, formerly of Honaker; and a number of additional special friends and relatives. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Draughn and the Rev. B. B. Nicks officiating. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at the residence.

RICKMAN, Cecil Fillmore, 65, of Bedford, died Friday, February 9, 1996 at his residence. He was born in Botetourt County on August 18, 1930, a son of the late Charlie Roosevelt Rickman Sr. and Mary Lizzie Markham Rickman. Cecil was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Rickman, three brothers, Francis Rickman, Floyd Rickman, Fred Rickman, and a sister, Martha Rudd. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Hess, Lynchburg, Phyllis Hodges, Goode, Lois Ann Rickman, Roanoke; one son, Wayne Rickman, Goode; three brothers, Charlie R. Rickman, Big Island, Robert S. Rickman, Roanoke, Jessie J. Rickmond, Rocky Mount; four sisters, Mary R. Eubank, Montvale, Helen R. Seward, Shackelford, Va., Ruby R. Caldwell, Roanoke, Rachel R. Wilson, Lynchburg; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Monday, February 12, 1996, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Patterson officiating. Graveside military rites will follow in the Virginia Memorial Park, with the American Legion Post #16 of Lynchburg. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.

STAFFORD, Mrs. Jessie Combs, 95, of Coles Point Community, Batesville, Miss., widow of the late Mr. Haynes Stafford, died Friday, February 9, 1996 at her residence. She was born September 3, 1900 in Pulaski, Va., a daughter of the late James Robert Combs and Mary Agnes Underwood Combs. She was a retired homemaker and member of Dora Highway Baptist Church, Pulaski. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Annabel Owens, Saulsbury, Tenn. and Mrs. Nellie Gentry, Batesville, MS; one son, John Stafford, Richmond; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. WALLER, Irene A. Lee, 70, of Radford, died Friday, February 9, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. She was born in Meadowview on March 25, 1925, and attended First Baptist Church on West Street. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, George Waller of Radford; a loving daughter, Evelyn E. Merritt of Radford; three grandchild ren, Melba, Melvin and Montrice of Radford; three sisters, Dora LeGrade and Ruth Helms of Des Moines, Iowa, and Helen Wade of Tacoma, Wash.; one brother, James Lee of New York, and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 13, at First Baptist Church, West Street, Radford, with the Rev. Wallis Brown officiating. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery. WOODARD, Alice M., 91, of Blacksburg, formerly of 507 S. Loder Ave., Endicott, N.Y, died Thursday, February 8, 1996 after a long illness at the Columbia Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Va. She was born in Norwich, N.Y. on April 30, 1904 and was the daughter of the late Edward and Emma Malloy of Oxford. She was also predeceased by her sister, Grace Fisher and brothers, Lester and Maurice Malloy. She is survived by her husband, DeWitt S. Woodard; and a daughter, Janice E. Woodard, both of Blacksburg; also by a son and daughter-in-law, Nelson E. and JoAnn Woodard; a granddaughter, Maureen L. Woodard; a grandson, Blair D. Woodard, all of Fullerton, Calif. Also surviving are her nieces, Diane Wieland, Mathews, N.C., Arlene Kiff, Unadilla, N.Y.; her nephews, Robert Fisher, Worchester, N.Y., Lyle Church, El Paso, Texas, Hubert Church, Earlville, N.Y. and Cecil Church, Lansdale, PA.; her cousins, Mary T. Litchtenhan, LaGrangeville, N.Y. and Mildred Stober, Rochester, N.Y. Alice was a graduate of the Oxford Academy, Oxford, N.Y. and the Albany State Teacher's College. She was a teacher at U. E. High School in 1927 and from 1955 - 1963. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Endicott, and served as President of the Western Broome-Eastern Tioga branch of the Southern Zone of the New York State Retired Teacher's Association for two years. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 12, 1996, at 11 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, N.Y., with the Rev. Dr. L. Kenne th Hooten II, pastor of her church, officiating.
