In five years of teaching reading, language arts and social studies to Roanoke city seventh-graders, Teresa Martin has found them to be "mature, but young enough" to still respect their teacher.
"Their unique personalities really come through in seventh grade," Martin said. Another thing she's found is that kids that age don't like to be bored in school. Martin said she employs a variety of techniques and activities to keep things hopping in the classroom.
Not only are her pupils required to write book reports, but a project, such as making a puppet for a biography, also is assigned. Martin said she is a supporter of visual learning and often asks her pupils to make charts and posters . "They can show they understand the material by doing that," she said.
"Mrs. Martin is a great teacher. She makes it fun to learn," said the pupil who nominated her. "Once in a while you find one or two special teachers, and one of them who I have found is Mrs. Martin.
Martin, a native of Bedford County, is a graduate of Lynchburg College. She serves as pep squad advisor and enjoys going to the mall and spending time with family and friends.
