Council election ballot deadline near
CHRISTIANSBURG - The deadline to get on the ballot for May town council elections in Christiansburg and Blacksburg is fast approaching. Would-be candidates for the at-large seats need to submit a petition to the Montgomery County registrar's office by March 5 with the signatures of at least 120 registered voters from their towns.
County Registrar Sandra Chapin said she recommends candidates submit at least 175 to 180 signatures to make sure they have gathered more than enough eligible names. The registrar's office, located on the second floor of the Montgomery County Courthouse in downtown Christiansburg, has blank petition forms available. Interested candidates also should call the state Board of Elections to request a packet of information on running for office. The board's number is (800) 552-9745.
Council elections will be held May 7. In Blacksburg, the seats held by Michael Chandler, Waldon Kerns and Frances Parsons will be up for election. In Christiansburg, the seats held by Wayne Booth, Truman Daniel and Scott Weaver will be on the ballot. Terms on the seven-member councils run for four years. As of Monday, no one had filed a petition to be on the ballot in either town.
Blacksburg honored for budget work
BLACKSBURG - The town of Blacksburg recently received an international award for its budget.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, a non-profit professional association, honored the town with its distinguished budget presentation award last month. The award "reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of government budgeting."
In order to win, a budget must serve as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device.
Assistant Town Manager Bonnie Svrcek also was awarded a certificate of recognition from the association, which is designated to the individual who is primarily responsible for achieving the budget award.
