Northwest Airlink sets January record

Mesaba Aviation Inc., which operates as Northwest Airlink under an agreement with Northwest Airlines, said Monday it set a record for January boardings at Roanoke Regional Aiport: 1,244 passengers.

Minneapolis-based Mesaba, which has operated five daily flights between Roanoke and Detroit since August 1992, said passenger boardings for the October-January period were up 7 percent from the year before.

T-bill rates drop

The Treasury Department on Monday sold $13.8 billion in three-month bills at an average discount rate of 4.8 percent, down from 4.88 percent last week, and $13.8 billion in six-month bills at an average discount rate of 4.71 percent, down from 4.79 percent.

The three-month bill rate was the lowest since 4.79 percent Sept. 26, 1994. The six-month bill rate was the lowest since 4.6 percent June 27, 1994.

The Federal Reserve said the average yield for one-year Treasury bills, the most popular index for adjustable-rate mortgages, fell to 4.85 percent last week from 4.93 percent the previous week.

Coal output down

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - U.S. coal production fell 18 percent in the week ended Feb. 3, to 17.7 million tons from 20 million tons the week before, the U.S. Department of Energy said Monday. The industry produced 21.4 million tons in the same week last year.

Virginia mines produced 636,000 tons during the survey week, down from 644,000 tons the previous week and 727,000 tons in 1995.

Coal production so far this year is 92.2 million tons, 7.6 percent behind last year.

Crestar Financial Corp. has agreed to acquire the deposits, customer accounts and selected loans of 10 branches of Mellon Bank in Montgomery and Prince Georges counties in Maryland. The acquisition, to be completed in the spring, will bring Crestar about $220 million in deposits and 17,400 customers. Crestar, which has bought other banks in Maryland, will have 27 branches in D.C.'s Maryland suburbs.

First Union Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., said Monday it has joined the IBOS Association, the technical and business alliance of leading banks in Europe. This extends the agreement previously in place with First Fidelity Bancorp., which merged with First Union Jan. 1. Participation will further develop cash management, treasury and other cross-border products between the United States and Europe, First Union said.
