VILLANOVA HANDS LA SALLE WORST LOSS

Kerry Kittles scored 25 points Villanova routed city rival La Salle 90-50 at the Spectrum, the worst loss ever sustained by the Explorers.

Jason Lawson and Eric Eberz each had 11 points for the Wildcats, winners of eight straight. Romaine Haywood had 14 for La Salle, which has lost eight of nine.

The worst previous loss by the Explorers was a 113-77 defeat against Notre Dame in 1977.

After neither team scored in the game's first two and a half minutes, the Wildcats (21-3) toyed with the Explorers (5-18), leading by 30 points at the half.

The overmatched Explorers tried to play a slow-down game early, but they missed their first six shots, and had four turnovers, including two shot clock violations, in the game's first five minutes.

No. 16 Syracuse 63, Rutgers 54: At Piscataway, N.J., John Wallace scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in an uninspired victory.

The Orangemen (19-6, 9-5 Big East) certainly didn't look like the team that beat then-No. 8 Georgetown by 21 points two days earlier.

Rutgers (6-15, 3-10) was somehow within 39-36 with 9:53 to play, but as it has so many times in its first season in the Big East, it allowed the big run to come.

Syracuse scored the game's next 11 points to take a 50-36 lead with 5:03 left

Roanoke 76, Guilford 72: In Greensboro, Roanoke College ended Guilford's season, as the Maroons came back from a 13-point halftime deficit and claimed an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game Monday night.

Tim Braun led all scorers with 24 points for Roanoke (19-4, 14-4). Jason Bishop chipped in 14 points and five rebounds, and Jon Mahen had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Tim Wooten was the high-scorer for Guilford (7-17 overall, 3-15 conference) with 19 points.

Ferrum 75, Greensboro 70: Former Alleghany standout Michael Hunter scored 27 points and Marcus Toney added 26 and nine assists as the Panthers (10-10, 7-3) downed the Hornets for a Dixie Conference victory at Ferrum.

Toney, a Magna Vista native, set a record for freshman scoring in a single season with 447 points.

Virginia Western CC 124, New River CC 104: Tremayne McHeimer scored 23 points and Sam Barrett added 20 to lead Virginia Western Community College (8-4) to a win at Dublin. Mel Gray had 25 for New River Community College (2-3).

Women

Virginia Tech 86, Temple 49: In Blacksburg, Michelle Hollister had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hokies (7-13, 5-6) to an Atlantic 10 victory over the Owls (4-18, 1-11).

Cynthia Lee scored 13, and Lynette Nolley and Sherry Banks each added 11 for Tech, which led 38-23 at halftime.

No. 9 Virginia 83, North Carolina 70: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Wendy Palmer got 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Tora Suber had 20 points and nine boards to lead the Cavaliers over the Tar Heels.

After shooting a poor 12-for-35 from the field in the first half, the Tar Heels went ice-cold during a decisive 21-6 Virginia run in the second half.

Note

DANIELS EULOGIZED: Dayton center Chris Daniels was fondly remembered Monday as a young man with a mischievous streak and a big smile for everyone he met.

More than 500 mourners filled Community of St. John Holy Rosary Church for an African-inspired ``coming home celebration'' of beating drums and paying homage to ancestors.

Daniels, 22, of Columbus, died Thursday in Dayton after collapsing in his off-campus home. A cause of death has not been determined.

Daniels' casket was surrounded by more than 20 floral sprays. He was buried with his No. 10 orange and white jersey. Also in the casket were photographs of Daniels, his girlfriend and family members.
